Vedic Math

Watch YouTube videos and do tutorials on Vedic Math a mental calculating system from India. Vedic maths is truly an elegant math form inspired by the Vedas, or sacred Hindu texts. Between 1911 and 1918 Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960), a saint-yogi, researched the ancient Indian scriptures and drew forth 16 sutras, or word-formulae and created Vedic math.

Western mathematics is very left-brain. Vedic math utilizes the right brain as well; hence making math more assessible to a larger audience. As a math teacher, I believe Vedic math can support more students in having a positive experience with math, including learning disabled children. The beauty of Vedic mathematics is based on interrelations and patterning. It allows for creativity and multiple pathways to the answer - often done on one line or mentally!

Digit Sums and Casting Out the Nines

16 Sutras + 14 subsutras = 1 Amazingly Fast Calculating System!

The 16 sutras, or aphorisms, and 14 subsutras can used in a variety of problems to flexibly and efficiently solve problems.
  • Sutras
    * By one more than the one before
    * All from 9 and the last from 10
    * Vertically and crosswise
    * Transpose and apply
    * If the Samuccaya is the same it is zero
    * If one is in ratio the other is zero
    * By addition and by subtraction
    * By the completion or non-completion
    * Differential calculus
    * By the deficiency
    * Specific and general
    * The remainders by the last digit
    * The ultimate and twice the penultimate
    * By one less than the one before
    * The product of the sum
    * All the multipliers
  • Subsutras
    * Proportionately
    * The remainder remains constant
    * The first by the first and the last by the last
    * For 7 the multiplicand is 143
    * By osculation
    * Lessen by the deficiency
    * Whatever the deficiency lessen by that amount and set up the square of the deficiency
    * Last totalling 10
    * Only the last terms
    * The sum of the products
    * By alternative elimination and retention
    * By mere observation
    * The product of the sum is the sum of the products
    * On the flag

Ideas for Teachers

  • Homework Assignment: I gave visiting this lens as a homework assignment for my kids. I made them write a few sentences about what they did and learned.
  • Add a few Vedic lessons in to your curriculum. I usually do a little mini-lesson as a warm-up every couple of weeks. My kids love it!
  • Check out the tutorials or get a book on Vedic math to learn more. This lens just gives you a flavor of the richness of Vedic math.
  • Share this lens with others. Email it to friends and other teachers. I have a link to it on my website.
  • Sign up for the "Vedic Maths India" blog to receive new posts on techniques.
  • Subscribe to my YouTube videos. You need to have a YouTube account, which is free. When I make a new video, you'll get an email notifying you that a new video has been posted. I also have a YouTube group called "Math Tutor:Vedic Math," which has a collection of instructional videos.

    I've also created a "Math Tutor" group, which includes a variety of pre-algebra and algebra videos, though not necessarily Vedic math. I'd love to get a large collection of great videos available for students. So please share or add to this collection.

    I have an alternative answer to your video about why 9=0.

    Both are the last numbers before a change in value. From 0 to 1 begins 1 digit, from 9 to 10 begins 2 digits, from 99-100 begins 3, etc. All are either 0 or a multiple of 9.
