Vegetable Garden Seeds ~ Getting Started

iconStarting your vegetable garden seeds inside can be a great way to ward off those end of winter blues. It gives you something exciting to do that is focused on Spring and not how long you've been cooped up due to snow and ice.

When starting your vegetable garden seeds you just need a potting medium, some moisture and some heat. A potting bench is always handy to keep thing organized and neat. If you've been starting seeds for a long time or this is your very first time gardening "from scratch," you will love Park Seeds Bio Dome seed starter
icon. It's the easiest, most efficient and successful seed starter I've ever used -- and I believe I've tried them all! Once you see that first crop of seedlings sprout in the Dome, you won't bother with any other method.

The best thing about the Bio Dome is that you control the climate your seeds receive. If your room is drafty, leave the dome cover on and close one or both of the vents in the top. If you need great air circulation among the seedlings, just open the vents, prop up one side of the dome, or remove the whole thing. If your plants need high heat and humidity, find a warm place, like on top of the refrigerator, close up that dome, and you've created a mini-hothouse!

As your seedlings take off, their roots will grow down the sides (and through the center) of the bio sponges, eventually coming out the other end if you wait long enough! And that's another advantage of the Dome -- if your transplanting is delayed, you don't have to re-pot all the little plants or worry about the roots spiraling around and around the rim of the pot. The Dome is so well-ventilated and the Bio Sponges so sturdy that you can delay planting for weeks without sacrificing a plant!

Organic Vegetable Seeds ~ Planting an Organic Vegetable Garden

If you want to start an organic vegetable garden your best bet is to start with Organic vegetable seeds. Buying organic vegetable seeds from one of the reputable seed companies is your best bet to ensure organic quality.

I get my organic vegetable seeds from Park Seed. Park Seed only sells Certified Organic vegetable seeds that are grown under conditions mandated by the National Standard for Organic Agriculture, including rigorous soil testing and the use of only approved fertilizers and pest controls. The organic vegetable seeds offered by Park Seed are Certified by Clemson University DPI.

I also like Park Seed because you can get just about any organic vegetable seeds from A -Z. They have so many choices available and I've always had great luck with their seeds.

Vegetable Garden Seeds ~ How to Plant

Heirloom Vegetable Seeds ~ What is that??

Heirloom Vegetable Seeds are plants that have been around for at least 50 years. The seeds are saved and passed down from generation to generation. These days many of the heirloom varieties have been lost because they aren't profitable, or necessarily easy to ship. They may also not be what people expect to see when they think of a specific fruit or vegetable.

Heirloom vegetables may be a color you don't expect, a tomato may be purple, or striped yellow and orange. They also have a much better flavor than regular vegetables.

You don't have to grow an entire vegetable of heirloom seeds, but why not try one heirloom variety? You can then save the seeds from your own garden and have heirloom seeds for next year as well.
