Vegetable Oil As Fuel

Did you that the first known use of vegetable oil as fuel dates back the 1900's?? research continued and in the early 1980's vegetable oil made its commercial debut!!! However during the 80's petrol prices began to steady and the popularity of this alternative fuel began to slide. Its not until recently, with rising fuel prices and noticeable damage to the environment, that people have regained an interest.

Research has proved that vegetable oil can be used as a successful, clean burning, renewable fuel source. It is best used by converting the vegetable oil into biodiesel using a biodiesel processor. This is not as complicated as most people think, and the popularity of homemade biodiesel has grown in recent years. Everyone from scientists to average joes have taken notice of the countless benefits of using vegetable oil as fuel.

"Biodiesel is one the most thoroughly tested, and highly approved fuels on the market"

Vegetable Oil As Fuel - Making a biodiesel test batch

To begin the process of converting vegetable oil to fuel you will need 3 basic incrediants of lye, methanol and vegetable oil You will also need a biodiesel processor, which you can either buy - usually from $500 to $3000 - or make yourself.

This example is for practice purposes only

When starting out its always best to practice by making a test patch. This can be done with a small blender or mini-processor. Measurements are important and its recommended to use 3.5 grams of rye to every litre of unused vegetable oil, or 6 grams of rye for used oil.

The first step is to get a THICK mixing container (it gets hot), and add the lye with the methonol, a little bit at a time. Then mix until the lye has fully dissolved. What you have left is known as methoxide!!
Next pre-heat the vegetable oil and add to the methoxide, throw this in the blender on slow for about 30 mins, then allow to sit for about 1 day.

You should have thin liquid at the top, and thick liquid at the bottom.

"biodiesel performs in any temperture, and is better for your car than regular diesel"

Vegetable oil as fuel - where to get the biodiesel ingredients

The ingredients it requires to make your first vegetable oil as fuel test batch are quite easy to find, and usually very cheap. I've outlined some most common places you can go to find the three essential ingredients - vegetable oil, rye and methanol.

  • vegetable oil - You can simply contact some local resturants or takeway stores and ask if you can collect there waste vegetable oil, this is usually free, or may cost a small fee depending on the person you approach

  • Lye can be purchased in most grocery stores - except if you live in Califonia - and is usually found in the cleaning section or bathroom products. Lye is a commonly used in soap, or to unclog drains. If you are a Californian resident it probably best to try google

  • Methanol can be brought from most hardware stores, however if your finding it hard to come by, you'll find most cart racing tracks or similar places store it
