Easy Vegetable Gardening

My husband is into growing vegetables. He has done it since we were married. So much that he started a web site, http://www.vegetable-gardening-made-easier.com/ in January of 2009 after he returned home from Afghanistan. David has turned easy vegetable gardening into an artform with his simple instructions and videos. He loves to grow his own vegetables and always has except for the five years he was in the Middle East working as a civilian contractor.

David has gardening on the brain and decided to help others make vegetable gardening easier. He gives tips and videos on how he gardens in our backyard. If you have a small space, he has great ideas for how to get the most veggies out of your backyard.

My Husband's Backyard Garden

The Vegetables Are Great

My husband's backyard garden that he started in February 2009 in San Antonio, Texas, is doing very well. My husband has always gardened, until 5 years ago when he went to serve in the Middle East as a civilian contractor. I tried to plant vegetables during the years he was gone, but with little success.

David has a green thumb. I kill plants, not on purpose, but mostly, they just croak when they see me! I did manage to grow a few tomatoes and cucumbers, but that was about it.

David loves going out in the backyard, working with the soil, planning the layout of the garden, tilling, planting, mulching, weeding, watering, and videoing his plants. His website will be a good one. It is already getting at least 60 visitors a day and growing and he has only had the site up for 3 months.

We have been eating strawberries, grape tomatoes, and 2 types of lettuce already. It sure saves us on our grocery bills which is wonderful. The vegetables are great.

Growing Strawberries In San Antonio

Strawberries

Growing strawberries in San Antonio is pretty easy. David bought a bunch of starter plants back in February 2009 and planted them. A few weeks later, we started harvesting. Every few days, more strawberries are ready to be picked. They are juicy, red, and delicious.

We just never have enough for the whole family to eat for dessert at once. It would take many plants to do this and our yard is just not big enough if we want room for vegetables. David did plant runners so hopefully, the plants will grow and spread soon.

I know strawberries are not a vegetable, but David loves them so this is why he chose to include them in his backyard veggie garden.

Growing Green Beans

Green Beans In San Antonio

Growing green beans in San Antonio is a snap for my husband. I tried it during his absence with no luck whatsoever. He makes these plants grow like there is no tomorrow. When my kids were younger, they dreaded having to go out and pick the tons of green beans on all of our plants. I thought it was fun, mainly because I had never done that as a child. Cool, huh? So we would pick a ton of them.

Then, I got to wash and snap the beans and cook them up for dinner. Lots of times, there were too many. So I would blanch them and then freeze them. Blanching is just putting the beans in boiling water for about 3 minutes and then submerging them in ice water, cooling them down, and then draining and freezing them for later use.

Growing Tomatoes In San Antonio

Tomatoes

Growing tomatoes in San Antonio works great. We have successfully grown cherry, grape, and full-sized tomatoes in many varieties. Even I, can grow tomatoes, amazingly!

Be sure to pick some tomato cages up from the store and put them over the tomato plants while they are small so they can grow up around the cage. The cage supports the tomato plant and keeps the tomatoes off the ground. It keeps bugs away from the tomatoes as well because they are off the ground.

With the bright Texas sun, tomatoes ripen quickly here in San Antonio. It is extremely important that you water your tomato plants frequently or they will not produce tomatoes.

When you see the little yellow flowers come out on the vines, know that you will soon have baby tomatoes! Home-grown tomatoes taste so much better than store-bought tomatoes. You will love them.
