Vegetarian Grilling Recipes & Ideas

It's summertime, the official start of grilling season! In addition to providing the smoky flavor that emanates from the coals, grilling caramelizes the natural sugars in the vegetables and makes them taste extra sweet. Just about anything that sprouts from the ground or grows on a tree can be suspended over coals, including corn on the cob, zucchini, potatoes, onions, pineapples, mangoes, and mushrooms. Meat alternatives, such as veggie burgers, veggie dogs, and soy chicken, as well as seitan and tofu are other delicious grilling options.

Whether you're looking to cook up your basic BBQ fare for vegetarians or health conscious meat eaters, these products and recipes are sure to please.

Veggie Burgers & Hot Dogs

Cooking Veggie Burgers:
The first question I get when I bring the veggie burgers out to the grill is "How do I cook these?" To which I answer "Just like any other burger." Veggie burgers are pretty much already cooked straight out of the package and pretty much just need to be heated up.

The next question is "How do I tell when it's done?" That's a tricky one. Veggie burgers don't really change colors or have juices that run clear when it's done. When the burger is nice and hot all the way through, you can declare the burger done. You can tell that by either using one of those thermo-forks to tell how hot the middle is or I just use a fork. Since the burgers are usually cooked straight out of the freezer so once they're soft enough for a fork to poke through it easily I consider it done.

Firm, hearty, and perfect for grilling or barbecuing. Made from fresh organic grains, vegetables and protein rich soy. Just the thing to satisfy the most avid burger fan. Non-dairy/no cholesterol.

Cooking Veggie Dogs:
These guys are a little more traditional in their cooking style. They come unfrozen just like meat hotdogs. When you put them on the grill they get the grill lines and sorta blister a little bit. Just like meat hotdogs they're done when they're nice and hot (or when they're completely blackened if that's what you like).

Unlike the veggie burgers you need to keep track of the veggie dogs once they come off the grill. Since they cook up like the meat dogs they tend to resemble the meat dogs and if your guests aren't careful they could end up with a veggie dog when they were going in for a meaty dog. You don't want someone grabbing a veggie dog when they're expecting a meaty dog and you really don't want the vegan in the group getting a meaty dog thinking it's a veggie dog.

Waste Free Entertaining

Waste Free Entertaining
Celebrating often means large groups of people and disposable dinnerware, flatware, and napkins. While paper plates and napkins may be compostable in certain areas, most of this ends up in the landfill. If you are short on dishes or flatware, ask a guest to bring extras (including containers to take home leftovers), or purchase reusable dinnerware to have on hand for special occasions. And don't forget long-lasting cloth napkins which are an eco-friendly option for everyday use as well as celebrations.
