"For the foreseeable future, the U.S. will continue to need lots of oil in order to maintain our standard of living.

That is not true. We need lots of oil in order to maintain our particular standard of living.

If we changed two things -- eliminated suburban development that requires automobiles and stopped eating animal products, the production of which is extreme in its inefficiency -- our standard of living would be just as high (in fact, it would increase along with our quality of life) but we would need only a fraction of the oil we now need.

And all that needs to happen for both of those things to occur is for the government to stop subsidizing them both."

I`m a vegan, but you can be really unhealthy as a vegan, too. Vegan just means that you don`t use animal products, so you don`t wear leather, you don`t wear wool, and you don`t eat animal products. But you can eat french fries and stuff like that all day long.

"Thou shalt not kill" does not apply to murder of one's own kind only, but to all living beings; and this Commandment was inscribed in the human breast long before it was proclaimed from Sinai.

As soon as I realized that I didn't need meat to survive or to be in good health, I began to see how forlorn it all is. If only we had a different mentality about the drama of the cowboy and the range and all the rest of it. It's a very romantic notion, an entrenched part of American culture, but I've seen, for example, pigs waiting to be slaughtered, and their hysteria and panic was something I shall never forget.
