Funny, insightful and informative quotes about vegetarianism
I collected quotes about eating meat - or avoiding it, about eating animal products like cheese, and avoiding it. About health, environment, spiritual and personal reasons for being vegetarian or vegan.
One sentiment that I really liked was:
Why do people worry about vegetarianism being unhealthy more than we do about eating pizza daily and sitting washed out in front of the television?
Health reasons to be a vegetarian
(I'm no doctor, just passing on what's been said by others)

Most farmed animals are crammed into filthy sheds and slaughtered on killing floors that are contaminated with feces, vomit, and other bodily fluids. These unsanitary conditions have led to a rise in food borne bacteria.
Heather Moore
The report reviews scientific findings on trans-fats and finds that eating any at all raises levels of low-density lipoprotein - the so-called bad cholesterol. Therefore, if a limit were to be set, it should be zero.
Rimm said the panel, made up of nutritionists, biochemists, pediatricians and others, decided not to do that. "We can“t tell people to stop eating all meat and all dairy products," he said. "Well, we could tell people to become vegetarians," he added. "If we were truly basing this only on science, we would, but it is a bit extreme."

A. Whitney Brown
Animals are my friends ...
and I don't eat my friends.
George Bernard Shaw
I do not like eating meat because I have seen lambs and pigs killed. I saw and felt their pain. They felt the approaching death. I could not bear it. I cried like a child. I ran up a hill and could not breathe. I felt that I was choking. I felt the death of the lamb.
Vaslav Nijinsky
Would you kill your pet dog or cat to eat it? How about an animal you're not emotionally attached to? Is the thought of slaughtering a cow or chicken or pig with your own hands too much to handle? Instead, would hiring a hit-man to do the job give you enough distance from the emotional discomfort? What animal did you put a contract out on for your supper last night? Did you at least make sure that none went to waste and to take a moment to be grateful for its sacrifice?

Quotes on environmental reasons to be vegetarian or vegan
Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.
Albert Einstein
It's interesting to think that our No. 1 use of energy consumption, even more than transportation, is cooking our food," he said. "The No. 1 thing we put in our landfills is food packaging.
So if you're eating raw food, such as bananas on a bunch, you've eliminated both of those.
Kaylee Tejeda
And the kicker: "Our demand for meat, dairy, and processed carbohydrates drives us to consume way more calories than are good for us; and those calories are in foods that cause, not prevent, disease. The evidence is very clear that plants promote health."

Nick Kyriazi, Deutschtown. Thursday, May 24, 2007 In the "Saturday Essay" by Gery Steighner ("What about oil shale?" May 19 and PghTrib.com), Steighner says
"For the foreseeable future, the U.S. will continue to need lots of oil in order to maintain our standard of living.
That is not true. We need lots of oil in order to maintain our particular standard of living.
If we changed two things -- eliminated suburban development that requires automobiles and stopped eating animal products, the production of which is extreme in its inefficiency -- our standard of living would be just as high (in fact, it would increase along with our quality of life) but we would need only a fraction of the oil we now need.
And all that needs to happen for both of those things to occur is for the government to stop subsidizing them both."
For example, growing crops to feed farm animals requires massive amounts of water and land. Nearly half of the water and 80 percent of the agricultural land in the United States is used to raise animals for food, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Vegan quotes
Aka - about not consuming animal byproducts
I`m a vegan, but you can be really unhealthy as a vegan, too. Vegan just means that you don`t use animal products, so you don`t wear leather, you don`t wear wool, and you don`t eat animal products. But you can eat french fries and stuff like that all day long.
Emily Deschanel
The hardest part about being vegan is shoes. I mean, really, that`s the only difficult part, finding shoes that don`t have leather on them.
Lisa Edelstein
My perspective of veganism was most affected by learning that the veal calf is a by-product of dairying, and that in essence there is a slice of veal in every glass of what I had thought was an innocuous white liquid - milk.
Rynn Berry, quoted in Joanne Stepaniak, The Vegan Sourcebook, 1998
I just could not stand the idea of eating meat - I really do think that it has made me calmer.... People's general awareness is getting much better, even down to buying a pint of milk: the fact that the calves are actually killed so that the milk doesn't go to them but to us cannot really be right, and if you have seen a cow in a state of extreme distress because it cannot understand why its calf isn't by, it can make you think a lot.
Kate Bush
I eat everything that nature voluntarily gives: fruits, vegetables, and the products of plants. But I ask you to spare me what animals are forced to surrender: meat, milk, and cheese.

Spirituality and intelligence in vegetarians :)
If you eat meat regularly, you may not like these...
Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.
Genesis 1:29 (aka: the Bible)
In that day the wolf and the lamb will lie down together, and the leopard and goats will be at peace. Calves and fat cattle will be safe among lions, and the little child shall lead them all. The cows will graze among bears; cubs and calves will lie down together, and lions will eat grass like the cows. . . Nothing will hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, for as the waters fill the sea, so shall the earth be full of the knowledge of the Lord.
How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed in the name of gluttony?"
Oprah Winfrey (on her blog, June 2008)
"Thou shalt not kill" does not apply to murder of one's own kind only, but to all living beings; and this Commandment was inscribed in the human breast long before it was proclaimed from Sinai.
Leo Tolstoy
As soon as I realized that I didn't need meat to survive or to be in good health, I began to see how forlorn it all is. If only we had a different mentality about the drama of the cowboy and the range and all the rest of it. It's a very romantic notion, an entrenched part of American culture, but I've seen, for example, pigs waiting to be slaughtered, and their hysteria and panic was something I shall never forget.
Cloris Leachman
We manage to swallow flesh only because we do not think of the cruel and sinful thing that we do. Cruelty... is a fundamental sin, and admits of no arguments or nice distinctions. If only we do not allow our heart to grow callous, it protests against cruelty, is always clearly heard; and yet we go on perpetrating cruelties easily, merrily, all of us - in fact, anyone who does not join in is dubbed a crank.
Rabindranath Tagore
A mind of the caliber of mine cannot derive its nutriment from cows.
George Bernard Shaw
A man of my spiritual intensity does not eat corpses.
George Bernard Shaw
Truely man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.
Leonardo da Vinci
I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals, as surely as the savage tribes have left off eating each other....
Henry David Thoreau, Walden, 1854
I venture to maintain that there are multitudes to whom the necessity of discharging the duties of a butcher would be so inexpressibly painful and revolting, that if they could obtain a flesh diet on no other condition, they would relinquish it forever.
W.E.H. Lecky
You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Why Vegetarian? The Environment & cruelty to animals
-
There are several reasons for people to become vegetarians. For me it has to do with the spiritual effects of eating meat as well as the impact of eating animals on animals and the environment in general.

- I am a strict vegan. I will not eat anything that comes from animals nor will I wear anything that comes from animals or from a company that test on animals or sells fur. Anyone that can ingest the flesh or by product of another animal is beyond me. Milk, cheese, fish and eggs are all part of the suffering. Do not let another die for your own appetite. It is not right, for they did nothing to you.
I am a law student and one of my classes is studying Thoreau. I am currently reading Walden and haven't gotten to the quote about not eating animals. Now I am very excited that he was like this. I would have never of guessed it. Excellent quotes The funniest one was, "I am not a vegetarian because I love animals, I am a vegetarian because I hate plants." I burst out laughing on that one! So funny. Thanks for the site well done.

- i use quotes like these on my facebook page, and its amazing how much anger is thrown back at me. its quite amazing to me, i think its their guilt, they must know that eating meat is wrong, but they don't know what to do to stop so they get on the offensive. i am guilt free, i can look at a cow in a pasture or pigs in a transport and know that I'm not causing them to suffer, and that I'm trying my best to stop others from causing them pain. i never tell others they are bad for eating meat, but they always say things, make 'funny jabs' at my expense, it has to be their own guilt!!!

- Circles of Identity, Love, and Empathy
- I recently had a vision of a signboard that read: "You know that Commandment; "Thou shalt not Kill? I meant that. Signed God." A cow has the same feelings and consciousness as the family pet. Hiring a killing is as bad as actually doing it yourself. Love animals. Embrace them in you're my-ness, as part of your brother-and-sisterhood. Don't have the stain of their deaths on your conscience or recorded on your book of life. Love yourself. Love everyone.
