A Vegetarian's Blog

My name is Kris Tarr. I have been strict vegetarian for a few years and as a webmaster of dozens of web sites I decided to make this site dedicated to vegetarians or anyone interested in becoming a vegetarian. On "vegetarians" here I mean near-vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians and vegans.

I am constantly reading books, magazines, blogs and articles online to keep this site up-to-date, so you will get the latest information on maintaining a healthy vegetarian diet.

If you are interested in vegetarianism, please visit my blog SimpleVegetarian.com (Sorry, but my vegetarian blog site is currently down for maintenance. It will be back online soon. Until then, please visit other great vegetarian sites), read this lens and learn from the books I'm recommending on this page:

Why Be Vegetarian?

Millions of vegetarians all around the world could give you a different answer. Most of us switched to a vegetarian diet for health reasons. Many of us decided to become vegetarians for protecting the environment. Loving animals in general is high on our list of reasons.

Some people switch to a vegetarian diet for simply losing weight (which is a very good alternative to weight loss pills) and when they notice the many other advantages that come with vegetarianism they decide to stay vegetarians for the rest of their lives.

For me it was the explosion of energy I noticed soon after starting my vegetarian life. I can go on for weeks without sleeping more than 4-5 hours a night (and I'm only in my early thirties) and wake up refreshed in the morning. Then I carry on with my days full of energy. I remember that before (back in my omnivore years) all my friends and co-workers used to call me "tired" because every time they asked me "How're you doin'?" I always answered "I'm tired" with my head tilted down and my shoulders slouched... I really felt exhausted before I became vegetarian. It's like if I've gone through some positive transformation when I turned 30 years old (though most people experience something closer to the opposite).

Vegetarians, Near-vegetarians And Vegans.

Some people are confused about vegetarianism or more like the different types of vegetarians.

Near Vegetarians
People who do not eat meat (beef, pork, chicken, lam etc.), but do it fish for example are usually called near-vegetarians.

Vegetarians
Also called lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat any kind of meat, not even fish or seafood, but they use certain animal-byproducts, like dairy (lacto) products (milk, cheese etc.) and eggs (ovo).

Vegans
Vegans do not eat meat, seafood, fish, dairy or egg products. Most vegans don't even eat honey or use products made out of the skin or fir of an animal.

Since I eat fruits and vegetables only, but occasionally I eat food that had some eggs used in it, I belong to the middle group of vegetarians. But I do not eat dairy products, mostly because shortly after eating them my body reacts by showing hundreds of tiny pimple looking spots all over my skin. In fact, that was the reason I tried the vegetarian diet in the first place. I do use honey for cooking and occasionally I add it to my tea. Though I use eggs for cooking, I could not eat an omelet or a cooked egg.

Is It Safe To Be On A Vegetarian Diet?

It's one of the first questions that goes through ones mind when vegetarianism comes up as a subject.

The way I see it is that no matter what you do eat or what you do not eat, it has to be in balance like anything else in life. If you eat too much of something or not enough of something there is a good chance that you will become ill.

I truly believe that as long as you eat a balanced vegetarian diet you are actually going to be healthier than non-vegetarians. Here is why:

- First of all after reading dozens of books about health and vegetarianism I learned that as an animal dies certain bacteria start spreading in the flesh. Some of that bacteria can even survive severe temperatures, so when you freeze the meat or cook it the bacteria remains alive. When this bacteria enters our body with the meat it will try its very best to spread again. Now if our immune system is in good shape it will get caught and killed very soon so we will not get sick, but this slows down our digestive process and weakens our immune system. Probably this is why I have been feeling more energized since became vegetarian. This is why I think it's actually safer to be a vegetarian.

- Second, eating enough fresh fruits and vegetables provides the body more than enough of all the necessary minerals, vitamins and protein the body needs.

- Third: "If you want to be alive, eat live food!" I don't know about you, but I couldn't eat a living animal.
