Rated G. (Control what you see)

(and other people too)

Before I start, I really got to say that whoever you are, I like you. Really. And I'm almost 100% sure that you're amongst the "other people" mentioned in the subtitle.

You've probably heard rumors about vegetarians being weak, pale, hairy hippies who eat tofu all the time and harass people with photographs of dead animals. I'll have to be honest and tell you that I've met other vegetarians who quite fit the above description, but the truth in this matter is...there is no such thing as an "average" vegetarian.

It's not what you think

Contrarily to some get-thin diets like "Ukrainian Women Don't Eat Lasagna" or "Melt your bacon: Eat Nothing But Bacon", a vegetarian diet has proven and real health benefits. But most vegetarians aren't in it to develop a gorgeous, corpse-like thinness or outrageously developed abs. Vegetarianism is a lifestyle, not a mere fad invented by some random baby-boomer pseudo nutritionist. And it's nothing new. I think the first known man to willingly become vegetarian was Pythagoras, the ancient Greek philosopher and math wiz who paid fishers to throw their catch back into the sea.

What's in it for Daddy?

What about feeling lighter? What about having lower risk of heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and osteoporosis?

Things you'll need

It's very easy to become vegetarian, all you really need is : your mind, your body, information and a hammer.
The first, and often easiest thing to do, is to put the hammer away and forget I brought it up.
Seriously, there are some simple nutrition basics to know: you'll draw most of your energy from carbohydrates and lipids (fatty acids), contrarily to popular belief, proteins aren't just a source of energy. The body uses the various amino acids composing proteins to heal and maintain the body, so if you draw your energy mostly from proteins, you're using what your body needs to maintain health. Also, calcium isn't only found in dairy products, in fact, broccoli is a richer source of calcium than dairies.

I gotta run now...

With all the info I've given you, adopting a complete or partial vegetarian diet should be pretty easy, just remember that the key is deversity and that this is just a starting point; visit the websites I'll be naming, read books about it too. It's far from being hard and far from being dull.

About foxenigma

I'm a photographer, author and infopreneur that hails from the cold land called Quebec. I've been a vegetarian for about five years now and hold the not-yet-popular (but nevertheless very high quality) blog Vegetarian Life. As for photography, I learned mostly trough contact with other photographers such as Mike Herring (Hi Mike!) and Roland de Québec; I've done cultural photojournalism for a while and since I studied in an area of natural breathtaking beauty, I've done a lot of landscape, but I now concentrate mostly on portrait photography.
