2 Litre BMW gets 54 MPG...True or false?

80MPH

Yes its ...........

true! I drove on the M4 the other week going on holiday for a few days in a 2 litre BMW 3 series coupe. I travelled between 75 and 85 mph but every chance I had I lifted my right foot off the accelerator just a shade and the consumption went up from a standing start of 26mpg to over 54, in about 70 miles. The benefit of a Beemer is the fuel consumption dial which shows you how much fuel you are using but becomes a bit of a habit to watch it! It becomes a challenge to save fuel and still get a move on!

Then it was all screwed up! Why because of roadworks and a 10 mile quue tyhe average dropped from 54 down to 39, so that is a good indication of what so called road repairs cost us in fuel consumption.

Can anyone beat this?

Tips on driving for better fuel economy

Easy on the gas George!

TOP TIP?....

Get the bus!

No seriously, how awful that is, but with the price of fuel at an all time high, it's becoming a realistic option. Some say it is only the equivalent price level of the late eighties? Who knows, what I do know that it is costing me more and that extra, chocolate bar is now using up ALL my loose change. Sigh... life is sooooo hard!

Anyway here are a few quick tips to get you started because, you want to start saving some money right? If you have too many ideas at the beginning you won't do any of it, so here we go....

FIRST TIP: Ease your foot of the gas pedal just a little on a level road until you here the revs drop a bit and you are still going at the same speed. Got it? You will find this takes some practice but it really does work and you will begin to see an improvement without going much slower.

SECOND TIP: This goes with the first ease right off when going downhill enough to maintain a safe speed. Some suggest freewheeling, by depressing the clutch but this is not allowed in some countries (UK I know) and you need to remeber to let the clutch out again. Don't make it hard on yourself, just ease off.

THIRD TIP. This is an easy one, make sure your tires are at the correct pressure for your vehilce not too high or too low. If you are not dsure go to your local tire dealer if you can't find it in your handbook.

Thats it... to start with more to follow, if you can practse thse three you will be well on the way to saving your hard earned (really?) cash.

Whats that... you are going to buy a "fuel saver"?

Great idea but DON'T DO IT until you have read this FREE eBook.

Magnetic Fuel Saving Device

Can you save fuel?

I tried one of these years ago and in my honest opinion I thought it worked! It was a home made device fabircated by a close friend. He had tried it and found it worked after reading some information about the principle.

I had a 2 litre car at the time and whether I drove more cautiously or not it did give me some extra mileage probably 3-4 miles per gallon. Not a lot but also easily achieved as mentioned before that simple act of taking your foot pressure off the accelerator pedal a fraction will save you at least that without fiddling around on your engine!
