Computer Technology. Internet eCommerce. Video Tutorials. Web Development. Windows and Linux.
Hi there and welcome to my lens. I'm a self-professed computer geek, sometimes guru, offering technical support on desktop computers and internet-related issues. Still perform computer upgrades, software installations, troubleshooting. Trying my hand at creating video tutorials and designing websites (mostly WordPress blogs). Getting used to the cold winds and snow in the Appalachian Mountains!
Latest project: Published my first business productivity tools resource list dubbed Personal Swipe Files and working on a DVD for local business owners. I dual-boot Linux WinXP and promote OpenSource alternatives. Since I use both Linux and Windows, from time to time, you'll see reviews and tips about Linux aimed at new users or curious onlookers. And ... just forgive me if I get a little techie on you. Just know, I was on my next cup-o-joe and probably stayed up all night!
This lens aggregates my interests, highlights selections from several of my web sites, and might impart some interesting information. If you like what you see, get in touch.
NOTE: I've got a number of items about Linux here. My thanks to Linux users who weigh in on the polls and duels. I'm creating a lens for Linux newbies and folk who want to Try Linux but need a little encouragement. Your answers here help me make that lens -- and the newest one, Time4Linux -- better!

Entertaining Messages
Lessons Can Be Found In The Strangest Places

I love cartoons from days gone by and vintage videos that impart a message while being funny and entertaining. These are some videos I've come across in my wanderings. Most of them are in the public domain. You'll find them on my websites enhancing the messages or making a point all their own.
I'll share pics with you as I find those that entertain and impart a life lesson. See the Featured Vintage Cartoon section below for my latest discovery. You'll find previously featured cartoons further down the page. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Don't forget to leave a comment!

Planning to Upgrade to Windows 7?
Compelled to Stay with Windows XP or Windows Vista?
Are you planning to upgrade from Windows XP or Vista to Windows 7?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes, Windows 7 For Me!!
Terrice says:
I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and I like it. I ran a machine with a Mandrake Dist. of Linux a few years ago. I actually can how windows seven borrowed some of the features.

dannystaple says:
I actually had Vista running on a machine, and I can say that windows 7 is a decent upgrade in speed and compatibility on vista. However, had I been set up with XP on that machine still I would have been less likely to upgrade. Cool things in Windows 7 - much better multi-monitor support, sticky windows and the new tool bar. That and less hogging than Vista.

Absolutely Not!!
_Joan_ says:
Not voluntarily. At some point I'll have to get a new computer, and I'll be at the mercy of whatever OS is available.
Posted March 16, 2010
vernessataylor says:
I don't think so. I bought a copy of Vista ages ago and never upgraded ... Didn't see the need. And I can't say I have a compelling reason to move to Windows7. But I will commit to digging around a bit more to see if I should. One thing about Win7 I discovered after a family member bought a new computer with it pre-installed: it doesn't ship with many of the drivers for already-popular hardware. Yuk!

Are you diligent in these things? Is it time to beef up your online and offline security. Here's the info you need to have as much peace of mind as you can in a world fraught with hackers, crackers, and nuts in general. Do these things and you'll be ahead of the pack.

Oh I love it. I do use windows too, but for tiny machines (like the one sat on my robot), and for tinkering, geeking and generally trying out code or web tricks you really cannot beat Linux. It is also damned good for Chinese input.

My Comments On Computer and Internet Stuff Around The Web via BackType and Disqus
I like to comment on a variety of stuff around the web. These comments are pulled from blog posts around the web (around the world!) by BackType. If you spend time making your voice heard on issues, trends, and things that matter to you, here's a great way to make sure you know what you've said. :) You can easily add BackType to your website using widgets or plugins.
To add it to your Squidoo Lens, don't use the BackType module. Instead, use an RSS module. Grab your feed from your BackType account. Add it to the Squidoo RSS module. You're golden!
Fetching RSS feed... please stand byWhat The Wordle?
Made Up of the Words and Phrases of This Lens
A CNN reporter shared his discovery of "wordles" on the night of the 2010 State of the Union Address. He took the entire speech and created a Wordle from it. His was in black and white. Truly impressive. This is my first attempt to make one. So how is it done?
I used the words from this Squidoo lens. But you can also grab the RSS feed from your blog. Or use the URL of a page from the web. Or cut and paste the phrases you want to use. The Wordle engine smashes all the words together then gives you the opportunty to select fonts, colors and various effects. Voila! An image of epic profundity!
The original wordle was too big to fit here. I used the GIMP image tool (like photoshop, but free) to scale it down.
You can make your own or use those saved by others over at http://www.wordle.net. You can find all the Wordles I've created here.
Created by lcoach2 using Wordle. Scaled with GIMP. Images of Wordles are licensed Attribution 3.0 United States
What kinds of wording would you turn into a Wordle? Go make one!

Hey, your Tweets were one of the ones I followed from Twitter when I found Squidoo. I have just finished my second Lens on a 3-step plan to achieve your Goals and New Years Resolutions. Thanks for stopping by and the rating :) I'm pleased you like the tutorials. Making a lens out of them is a good suggestion; I'll consider that as soon as time permits.
Your blog posting on the things to do to increase Squidoo rank was spot on! Would it be ok to add a link to it here on this lens?
