Victor Frankl, physician, teacher, theorist, and therapist, survivor of World War II concentration camps

This is a tribute to a man who contributed to the lives of others by teaching with penetrating insight into the psychological nature of those who survived World War II or were born into the world with a history of the Holocaust.

He believed human beings have the ability to triumph over adversity

I had coffee with Victor Frankl in Vienna during the winter of 1982. During that meeting, we discussed his time in Auschwitz, the nature of therapy, and the value of finding meaning in the most difficult situations in life.

As a lecturer, Victor Frankl described how he found meaning in the concentration camps and how his psychotherapy clients found meaning in their lives in the aftermath of great loss.

Dr. Frankl described his existential theory and applications of that theory in his books "Man's Search for Meaning" and "the Unconscious God." As an author, he wrote in German. As a lecturer he taught in both German and English.

For many years he taught courses at universities in Europe and North America simultaneously.

Through his compassion for others and his ability to recognize the value of their struggles to find meaning, Dr. Frankl articulated "logotherapy" and how our responsibility is "for our...own existence."

He continue to inspire others with his story and his theory.

Victor Frankl's Biography

Frankl was born in Vienna into a Jewish family of civil servants (Beamtenfamilie). His interest in psychology surfaced early. For the final exam (Matura) in Gymnasium, he wrote a paper on the psychology of philosophical thinking. After graduating from Gymnasium in 1923, he studied medicine at the University of Vienna and later specialized in neurology and psychiatry, concentrating on the topics of depression and suicide. He had personal contact with Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler.
