Early British and American Politics

A glimpse of early British and America politics, and politicians, from Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) to Queen Victoria; as published in newspapers during the Victorian era and therefore as seen through the eyes of people alive at the time.

The source information is from a large collection of Victorian Era newspapers saved by my great-great-grandfather, George Burgess (1829-1905) during his life. He spent over 12 years in America from the age of 15 and on his return to England in 1857 he bought back with him a selection of early American newspaper cuttings which formed the beginnings of his Victorian Scrapbook.
