Hanging Stockings by the Chimney with Care

Christmas Eve when children leave plates of cookies and glasses of milk out for Santa, they would never forget to hang their Christmas stocking by the chimney with care. Do you know why? In hopes that Saint Nickolas' would soon be there.

Victorian Christmas Stockings are so beautiful, delicate and elegant. If you chose to have a Victorian Theme Christmas, having the stockings just hadd that much more beauty! Regardless, hanging Christmas stockings is always exciting and most families that celebrate Christmas have done this for generations.

Long time ago, Christmas stockings use to be a child's main Christmas. Santa would usually place some fruit and nuts in the stockings, sometimes maybe a piece a candy or two. I remember elder people telling me that sometimes (if they were extra good) they would find a couple of pennies in the stocking as well. Sometimes, if Santa had enough room in his bag, there would also be a little toy sticking out of the top of the stocking. So Christmas stockings are pretty important.

Oh, I am sorry you do not have chimney? That's okay, neither did I and I am not sure I ever had one. But I do know that no matter where I put my Christmas stocking Santa always found them. Today they have decorations that are sort of heavy that sits on your counters and they are made just to hold Christmas Stockings. So you see, you do not have to have a chimney to hang stockings, the most important thing is you have a Christmas stocking.

An Angel Box

type=textWhen I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a Brownie or a Girl Scout. But because of finances I was never allowed to join either, not to mention we were never in one place for very long. One time during our stay in a little town; I attended a Sunday School Class and they were having a "Mission Weekend Camping Trip"! I had never been camping before so I did not have one piece of camping equipment, but the people sponsoring this Mission Trip had extra supplies so they had stuff I could use. I cannot remember if there was a charge for the weekend or not, but somehow I was able to go. I earned a little Mission badge to sew on my shirt, it was one of the proudest days of my life.

When I was exploring around Squidoo the other day, I noticed that Jewelsofawe had written a lens called: The Path to a Mission. This is a blurb in the opening of the lens:

This lens is about my daughter and her mission trip she wants to go on. It will be on the island of Kauai in Hawaii.

She goes to a Christian school and she is trying to get enough money to go to this mission with some of the students at her school. The trip will be in March. She is doing a number of different things to earn the money to go there.
They will be going to a small school on the island. They want to spread the Word of God.

The second I read that opening, it took me back to the day when I went on my Mission Camping Trip. Then my thoughts went to - Wouldn't it be wonderful to try and help Jewels daughter raise a few extra dollars, and what better way to do that then to put up an Angel Box and have Santa Claus spread the word!! The link to the lens is: The Path to a Mission If you get a moment, please stop by and take a look around, it sounds like a wonderful opportunity for a child for many reasons!!

Merry Christmas!!

Making Victorian Christmas Stockings

For the past seven years of marriage to my husband, we have been collecting Victorian Christmas tree ornaments. They are delicate, elegant, rich in style and so beautiful on a Christmas tree and best we got them on sale!
Making Victorian Christmas Stockings can be the same thing. Making stockings really is not that hard. Decorating them is even easier these days because of hot glue guns. So let's see if we can put a list together showing things we will need:

-Delicate beige, cream white or mauve satin like material, let's say ½ yard.
-½ yard of white mesh material (I think that is what it is called)
-Cream colored lace about 1 inch wide, let's say about ¼ yard
-String of little plastic pearl beads, dried baby roses and little plastic gems
-Cream and mauve thin satin ribbon
-Hot glue gun
-Scissors
-Brown bag from the grocery store or a piece of parchment paper

Take your piece of parchment paper or brown bag and draw out the shape of a Christmas Stocking. If you have a stocking from a previous year, use that as a guide and trace onto the paper. You are making a pattern.

Next, I pile my material together and fold it, including the mesh material. Pin the pattern onto the material and cut it out; you should end up with four pieces of regular material and two pieces of mesh. I only say this many because you want the stocking to be thick and strong.

Place one piece of mesh between two pieces of material and then do the same thing with the other two pieces of material and mesh. Pin all six pieces together and sew a one quarter inch all the way around the stocking. Do not sew the top leave it open at the moment. I like to sew the stocking twice, so I will go around the stocking again about one eighth of an inch from my previous stitches.

So the end result should be: two pieces of mesh sown between two pieces of material with a double stitch and the top of the stocking open with raw edges.

Decorate, with elegance...

Take a piece of wide lace and sew between the open edges at the top of the stocking. You want it so the lace will be able to fold down over the top. Remember to fold the raw edges under before you begin to sew together.

At this point use your imagination and create your stocking. Your glue gun will become your friend. I love putting bows, strings of pearl beads, ribbons and dried flowers on mine. By adding jewels it gives the stocking a feeling of elegance and delicateness.

When you are done decorating it the way you want to, sew a tube of material about five inches long and iron it flat. This will be sown on the top back of the stocking so it can be hung. Fold the tube in half and sew it onto the top back of the stocking making several stitches to make sure it is secure.

I am planning on some this Christmas (hopefully) and I will replace these pictures of the ones I make to give you a better idea.
