Was there life before the ipod & cd's ...... WHAT would you do?
The first machines that recorded and played music
For the upper and middle classes though the music box was the invention that began our love affair with demand led entertainment. For the first time en mass, music could be created without a performance.
Timberhill Gallery have one of the finest examples of Victorian music boxes by the Swiss Master Bermond. The box is technically termed an Orchestral Box as it has a piano, drums, bells and a wonderful organ. The organ is an unusual addition to the box and represents the height of music box production. The box is finished in a wonderful rosewood box with satin wood stringing and pewter and brass inlay. Even if you aren't interested in the box it is well worth a listen.
The best makers were Swiis Nicole Freres and Bermond were two of the very best. They were able to create the sounds of multiple instruments from a wooden box. For me the very best are the piano forte. They play full piano cords and fill a room with a wonderful sound.
The boxes can also have huge merit. The orchestral box above has the most beautiful pewter, brass, kingwood inlays into the very best rosewwod. They are fine pieces of furniture in their own right.
