Welcome to my Victorinox Explorer page where I rave about my favourite every day carry tool.

The explorer is my current every day carry knife. I use, and abuse, this multi-tool more then any of my others - it is the knife I use daily at work (retail office environment) and it is still performing well after 4 years of service.

Below you will find a list of some of the positive, and negative, points about owning this excellent multitool.

The Explorer - the benefits:

  • Two super sharp blades.
  • Handy set of screwdrivers - including a phillips head. If you buy the Plus version of the Explorer it comes with an ultra small screwdriver (ideal for the screws on the hinges of eye glasses).
  • Standard Vicorinox quality that will last for years. Victorinox items are tough.
  • It has a cork screw (which is my favourite item for undoing knots).
  • It does not have a locking blade. Whilst some may consider this to be detrimental I consider this a major plus for every day carry around town. Non-locking blades are more "city friendly", and having a Swiss Army Knife rarely raises eyebrows amongst the natives.
  • One of the few multi-tools that has a magnifying glass. Whilst it is possible to start fires with this item I find it is most useful for reading fine print (I am getting old, my eyesight is fading).
  • Handy pair of scissors.
  • A reamer thing at the bottom of the knife. I prefer to use this when slicing the tape on cardboard boxes (packages). I find it somewhat safer/easier then using one of the blades. I have also used the reamer of adding extra buckle holes to my belt (I have an ever increasing waistline).
  • Lastly, the Explorer is light and relatively small.

The Explorer - the negatives:

About the only aditional item I wish the Explorer had is a pair of pliers. I rarely need pliers but when I do there is no substitute. I have in the past used Swiss army knives that have them included - but it always means that I either end up with a much larger (more expensive) knife or I have to give up a benefit of carrying the Explorer (usually the magnifying glass).

Lately, to solve this little problem, I have been carrying the Leatherman P4. The P4 is a mirco multitool that includes a small pair of pliers. This combinatation of the Explorer and P4 has worked successfully for me this past two months.

If the Explorer sounds right for you then there is only one major choice you need to make - do you buy the standard Explorer or the Plus version? The way I suggest you choose is this; if you wear glasses with screws then buy the Plus version, if not - buy the standard version and save a small amount of money.
