How To Get Web Site Traffic From YouTube
If you have web site video -- and you should -- you can immediately take advantage of the million plus views a day YouTube gets to give your web site a big boost of free website traffic. Here's how to do it.
Opening an account with YouTube is totally free and relatively simple. There are just three areas you need to be aware of and prepared for, in advance.
Like all forum type sites, you will be asked for a user name that will be displayed with your posts. It's always a good idea to devise a name to encapsulate what you are about. For example, I'm known as The Internet Marketing Magician, so my name of choice is always "marketingmagician".
If you were involved in video, you might choose "videoguy" or "videogal".
However, with sites with a level of membership as high as YouTube, it's likely your first choice of user name, may very well be taken. So it's a good idea to create a list of alternatives, in advance, rather than trying to devise something on the fly, when your first choice is already taken.
For the same reason, you should type up an eye catching headline for your video, plus a description of your video. In both these cases you need to put on your copywriter hat and come up with phrases that will really grab the casual YouTube surfer by the throat! Finally, you need to type out five or six keywords (they call them "tags"), which will allow your video to be found by the very people who might be interested in coming to your site.
Now for the video itself. The sole purpose of your video is to attract people to your web site, yet you cannot put a sales video on YouTube, because it will violate the terms of service and probably be deleted. So the best strategy is to put a teaser trailer on the site with your url displayed at the end of the movie or at some point during it. If you can end your narration by saying something along the lines of: "If you found this interesting, visit MySite.com for even more useful hints and tips.".
Needless to say, the content of your video -- as well as the quality of the presentation should be excellent. So much of YouTube's content is knocked up on a mobile phone or web cam with poor lighting, no titles and no intro music. So, if you can raise the bar and produce a professional looking trailer, with a title page with music that leads to a well lit, informative -- but incomplete -- video and finishes with a decent end title, showing your URL, not only will you be proud to let the world see it, you'll stand head and shoulders above the crowd and viewers will think you are someone worth listening too and your ratio of video views to web site visits will skyrocket as a result.
Finally when you come to upload your video, you'll see that there is a limit of 100mbs on the file size. However, this can still allow a decent quality video of several minutes length, provided you select the correct compression.
YouTube, state that you can upload videos in the following formats:
.wmv .avi .mpg and .mov
The file extension .mov are QuickTime movies and are often created by iMovie on a Mac.
Most users will have Microsoft operating systems and will be more familiar with .wmv .avi and .mpg, so here are the relative file sizes for the same video with a 3 1/2 minute running time converted into these four different formats.
%u2022 .wmv makes a file size of 858 Mb
%u2022 .avi makes a file size of 794 Mb
%u2022 Mpg2 makes a file size of 163 Mb
%u2022 Mpg1 makes a file size of 35 Mb
So, as you can see, you need to select MPEG-1 to get within YouTube's 100 Mb limit, even for this fairly short video. However, although MPEG-1 is only roughly equivalent to the quality of VHS video tape and of lower quality than that of MPEG-2, it is quite acceptable for streaming video and will give you a welcome boost of free website traffic.

It's not enough to realize you need to keep your marketing on the cutting edge by incorporating web site video. Like all endeavors from putting a
man on the moon to baking a cake, there is a definite formula to follow for success, and here it is.
Be sure your video starts instantly --even for dial up:/b>
Most web surfers, when faced with the candy store that is the internet, revert to childhood and adopt the attention span of a Guppy.
Consequently, unless your video snaps open the instant the page appears, you'll deny yourself the awesome marketing bonanza of web site video.
Ten seconds to live or die:
Even if your video is faster than your visitor's finger, don't get complacent.
Make the opening of your video really snappy by getting straight to your key message. Don't waste precious seconds saying who you are and where you come from, because this can be better handled by an overlay that flashes your name and your company logo on the screen, whilst you are getting your verbal message across.
Soundtrack:
Always remember people buy with their emotions, so don't overlook the subtle, but effective impact video music can have on them. But do bear in mind many people view your web sites illicitly -- whilst in the workplace -- so no sudden ear-splitting effects. Unemployed people don't make loyal customers.
Backgrounds:
If you have a section of narrative, give some thought to the background. A plain background is fine for a how-to-do video, but in a sales video, you should think carefully of a background that will enhance the feeling you are trying to convey. So, if you were selling toothpaste, you would convey the
feeling of a clean, fresh mouth with a view of snow-capped mountains.
And, if you've no time to trek to Aspen or St Moritz, simply use a chrome-a-key effect with a photo from a royalty free collection.
Study video marketing:
One of the traits separating successful people from the "also-rans" is the thirst successful people have for new knowledge. So never, stop learning about video marketing. The ideal time is when you are relaxing in front of the TV, because you can study the world's best practitioners of video
advertising simply by watching the commercial breaks.
See how they get right to the message, with great economy of words.
Time the duration of the ads and think what you would have done differently in that time frame. I promise you, before long, you will see patterns emerge which will give you a viable template you can use for your own web site video, confident you are modeling on the best.
