Understanding the Essentials of EDITING

    The first thing that needs to be established is that making a movie is not something you can do alone. You may be holding the best script ever in your hands but, unless you find someone willing to direct it, you won't get your movie made. But finding the director is just the beginning. Directors need producers and editors. The editors are really the backbone of filmmaking. The editor is the  one who puts the movie together so it flows in
a way that makes sense. Always remember to thank your editors! If you're wondering why I put so much emphasis on the editing, it's for good reason.  There's a little know secret about shooting a movie that makes the job of editing critical to the film's outcome. Filming is never done in the order of the script because the filming needs to happen when actors are availibale. Getting a group of actors together, who may all be working on other projects simultaneously, is no easy feat. As a matter of fact, it is not at all unusual for actors in the same film to never cross paths during the filming.

Lesson one: in, in, out

LETS START WITH EDITING

If you're going to remember anything I write let it be this. In, in, out
this goes back to when vhs was the main media format used. Basically you would have 2 tapes your source and your blank. Your source or master tape was the one containing the footage you wanted and the blank was the blank. Using a vtr1 (video tape recorder) and a vtr controller you would first mark your start (in1) point on the master tape. You then would switch decks to vtr 2 and at about 1 min into the tape mark your in2 point;
You have now set the point of origin were you will start to take the footage from your master (in1), at the point (in2) on the blank is where the tape will start to copy. (Feel free to ask questions about this).
Now return to vtr1 a find the end of the scene on the tape and mark out.
Although most things are edited using Final Cut or Avid these days you still have to go by the in in out rule, because it still applies only instead of tapes you are using clips on Hard drives

Liner and non-liner, what should you learn?

Because no one is sure what direction the film and television industry is going, if you can find someone to teach you learn both, because a lot of television stations still use vhs, as well as Digital.

Final Cut AVID Adobe premier which is used in the industry?

Final Cut is used the most then AVID after that Adobe
so you should learn Final Cut and if you can, learn AVID as well
