About

Many of the things I've learned I've learned from video games. Of course you have to pick the right games which is why I'm here to help.

Why use video games?

Video games are a part of life in this day and age. Don't be scared of letting your kids get a great experience just because of fallacies like "Game make your kids violent". If you control what your kids play, you have nothing to lose.

Tips

*Make sure the screen is at a safe distance from your child's eyes

*Always check the ESRB ratings

*Remember that video games are a passtime. Nothing beats quality time

CD-Roms and DVD-roms

Setting up

I would recommend having his or her own destkop in the bedroom. I'm not suggesting for your children to each have an expensive PC. Actually, I think an old computer would do better. Why? Most educational CD-roms do not require the latest technology. So a $200 computer will do. This also means that if your kid buys a PC game without telling you, chances are it won't work on it, so it's almost like having a parental control built-in. I would equally recommend for bedroom computers to not have internet unless you know exactly how to block certain content, but that's a different issue.

Educational CD and DVD roms are great because they are specialized for education, and do offer quite a bit of fun. I used to have a collection of about 20 CDroms, each on different topics but from the same series. I had loads of fun and learned a lot.

"Real" Video Games

Whether you're using a PC or a console, using "real" video games as learning tools is trickier. The first part to finding out what to pick is knowing what can be learned.

Skills

Reading

Obviously if your child is reading a lot, this will improve his or her reading speed and vocabulary as well as force comprehension as a lot of games require reading in order to understand what is going on. This not only helps English but also History as fictional stories are often made to reflect real history and issues. So what is the key to picking a game that is great for reading?

Games with NO spoken dialogue. If the characters speak, it won't matter if there are subtitles. Pick games that only put dialogue through text. I would recommend older RPG's such as Final Fantasy VII or Chrono Cross. Also you should check the back ESRB to find out about swear words. Do they use them and if so are they actually written out or are they in $%!# format?

Logic

What is logic good for? Logic is good for math. The ability to think will be great for math, science, and philosophy (much later on). So what kind of games are good for logic building? Well puzzle games are often good, and so are adventure games[point and click games]. So don't worry about getting beloved one that copy of Monkey Island 4 or getting your teen Myst. Also, Simulation games [pretend to be something in real life] like Zoo Tycoon or God games [pretend to be a God] like Populous 3 make great logic and strategy builders..

Map reading

Pretty obvious that games that have maps will help with geography and map reading. These are available in various games. Mostly they belong in RPG's and certain Platform Games.

Memory

There are games out there that focus on memory work such as Brain Age (quick memory) and Jeopardy (long-term memory).

Motor

No, I'm not referring to the fact of using a controller, though that technically is motor skill as well. I'm referring to games that will require certain things to be pressed at a certain time. Whether you're talking about rhythm based games like Guitar Hero or Fighting games with certain cominations required like Street Fighter games, there is plenty of Motor skill work to be done.

ESRB

Remember to check the ESRB ratings of a video game before buying it. While each child has a different amount of maturity, the ESRB ratings do help in deciding what is best. Also, if you look at the back of the video game's box, you will find explanations for the ESRB rating.

"Real" games for Reading skills

basically..RPG's

Yes they're old. But older games tend to be more censored and for a lot of parents out there that's a GOOD thing.

Online Games

While I most certainly do not think letting your child have internet on his or her bedroom computer is a good idea, having internet on a family computer is fine - ideally in the living or kitchen. This makes it easy to monitor. Here are some websites with educational games.

There are two key themes common to the development of games for education, namely:

This is a useful lens. I hope to see advances in learning software and games as my children grow. Computer and video games are terrific bribes - I mean rewards - for excellent behavior.
