The Rise And Rise Of Video Games Systems

Ralph Beer is acclaimed as the first man, in 1949, to really visualize the possibility of setting a game 'inside a television'. However, video games systems did not really begin life in earnest until 1971. At the time, the U.S., Japan, and Europe were clamoring for a new entertainment industry, and they turned Beer's idea into a burgeoning commercial entertainment medium such that, today, the video game industry, after two decades of sustained growth, has become an $11 billion industry, rivaling film as the most profitable entertainment industry in the world.

Things started to get interested when, in 1972, Atari was founded. Creating PONG, a game that was loosely based on table tennis, they found that they immediately had the world's first arcade video game on their hands.

But it was not until 1978 when the arcade game industry entered its 'Golden Age' with the release of Space Invaders by Taito. This incredibly more-ish game pulled all sorts of people in including developers who raced to come up with video games systems of their own. Soon there was Galaxian, Asteroids, Pac-Man and a range of others.

Video games systems were now getting mass produced and sole all over the world. At that point, the hugely successful Sega were to enter the fray, as did Nintendo, later to become one of the most successful video games systems manufacturers ever.

Soon a new era of video games technology was to begin. This was to be marked by the dawn of the video games system. Video games systems, also known as consoles, are electronic devices that are designed to do one thing - play video games over a television or computer screen.

The device that directs the games in most video games systems is known as the controller. They are all used to direct the action of the video game. Controllers come in all shapes and sizes, from a steering wheel to a joystick, from a gun to a paddle.

By 1978, Coleco Telstar and Magnavox Odyssey had emerged as leading lights in the business, but it would not be long before the Atari 2600 transformed the video games systems industry with their ROM cartridge based console called the Video Computer System.

The early 80's saw the launch of the 8-bit computer. Commodore 64, the Atari 800, the Apple II and the infamous Sinclair ZX Spectrum ruled the roost with the Apple have 20,000 programs written for it. Then came full-motion video in the form of Laserdiscs, for which Dragon's Lair was the most famous video game.

In 1984, the modern adventure game was born, with color graphics and a third person perspective, in the form of the Sierra King's Quest series. Then, in1987 LucasArt introduced the adventure game Maniac Mansion, the first game with its very own mouse-driven point-and-click interface.

Hand-held video games systems were staking their claim as the main players started to assert their control. Companies like Microsoft, Sega and Sony were coming to the fore with incredibly rich gaming environments like the Xbox 2001, Dreamcast and PlayStation respectively.

001- Crash

Tensions erupt when the tangled lives of a Brentwood housewife, her district attorney husband, a Persian shopkeeper, two cops, a pair of carjackers and a Korean couple converge over a 36-hour period in the diverse metropolis of post-9/11 Los Angeles. Sandra Bullock, Brendan Fraser, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Thandie Newton and Terrence Howard co-star in this Oscar-winning Best Picture from writer-director Paul Haggis.
002- The Bucket List

When corporate mogul Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) wind up in the same hospital room, the two terminally ill men bust out of the cancer ward with a plan to experience life to the fullest before they kick the bucket. In a race against the reaper, the new friends hit the tables in Monte Carlo, down obscene amounts of caviar and tear up the road in supercharged cars. Rob Reiner directs.
003- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

David Fincher directs this Oscar-nominated tale of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) -- a man who was born old and wrinkled but grows younger as the years go by -- with a screenplay adapted from a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The plot throws linear conventions upside down to explore love, loss and memory from the perspective of a character living under incredibly unique -- and unexpectedly difficult -- circumstances. Cate Blanchett co-stars.
004- The Pursuit of Happyness

Will Smith earned an Oscar nomination for an inspiring performance opposite his real-life son Jaden in this tearjerker about a struggling single parent who's determined to build a better life for his family. Chris Gardner (Smith) is smart and talented, but his dead-end salesman job barely pays the bills. When he and his son are evicted, they face trying times as a desperate Chris accepts an unpaid internship at a stock brokerage firm.
005- No Country for Old Men

A hunter (Josh Brolin) who stumbles upon a dead body, $2 million and a stash of heroin in a Texas desert absconds with the cash. But brutal thief Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) comes looking for it, with a local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) hot on his trail. The roles of prey and predator blur as violent pursuits of money and justice collide in this Oscar-winning morality tale from directors Joel and Ethan Coen, which nabbed the Best Picture prize.

In 1985 Nintendo released Super Mario Bros., an instant overnight global success. Releases of games now seen as epics, like The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Quest and latterly the incredibly amazing Final Fantasy were to continually break new ground upon new ground. Both Final Fantasy and Metal Gear were released in 1987, a very good year for video games!

The nineties saw the release of the Sims franchise, starting with SimCity and going strong all the way up to and beyond the release of The Sims video games itself, ultimately acclaimed as the best-selling PC game in history in early 2000.

Things started to get even more interesting in 1996 with the release of the first affordable 3D accelerator cards for personal computers. Suddenly the term '3-D rendering' took on a whole new meaning. If you don't believe me, can you remember your first glimpse at Quake? This was a 3-D game that had most people screaming for more, but it was the improvement in PC and video games systems that made it possible.

Video games systems

Soon epic games like Grand Theft Auto, NBA Jam, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat and the Lara Croft series were distracting many a school kid from their exam revision. We shouldn't ignore the Nintendo release in 1989 of their first Game Boy handheld video games systems.

This is swiftly taking us all the way up to the present day with the technology of the modern portable video games systems. In the last ten years Sega have departed, no longer to make any more video games systems. Until the release of their revolutionary Wii product, Nintendo fell behind.

Meanwhile, Sony was leading the industry with Microsoft launching their own video games systems. The Microsoft Xbox-360 and the Sony PlayStations are on a fast track, getting larger, faster, and stronger with new and better in-built hard drives. As their power grows, the designers' task becomes more and more in the realm of 'anything's possible'. Graphics are getting more and more unbelievable. If there is one concern, it would be that often the characterization and story-lines of the games do not match up to the quality of the effects and other computer rendering.

We are now in the era of the Xbox Elite and the PlayStation 3. With awesome games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear and Halo, it is almost impossible to choose between these two fully loaded video games systems. If you haven't already, try them both out soon. They will make you hairs stand on end.
