Does your Apple Video iPod freeze when you play back non-iTunes movies and videos?
Don't worry there's a fix, and you don't have to lose everything on your iPod!
Please rate my lens and leave me feedback! Thanks!
What's the problem?
Apple is retarded
- Did you update the firmware for your iPod?
The January 2006 firmware update causes non-iTunes video usually longer than 45 minutes to freeze, then start playing with no audio - So, we have to revert to the older firmware. This usually entails wiping the iPod clean of all data and reinstalling the original firmware
- But wait, I found a way to keep EVERYTHING INTACT! There are a few ways to do this.
Here is the fix
without losing all your music!
- To revert the firmware there are several steps.
- You must have the older firmware file around - you can find it on the iPod installation CD. Or you can download it
***Here***
Use either: iPod Updater 2005-11-17.exe or iPod Updater 2005-10-12.exe - You need to uninstall the current firmware/iPod software on your computer for this to work correctly.
- We will also need to edit the iPod SysInfo file so it thinks it has older firmware.
The file is located in the following directory:
\iPod_Control\Device
You need to be able to use your iPod as a disk drive and you also must have hidden folders visible. - There are two ways of editing SysInfo.
1. You can edit the file yourself using a hex editor. IF YOU USE NOTEPAD OR ANOTHER TEXT EDITOR YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING!
2.You can use software like iPodWizard to change the SysInfo file for you.
Resources for fixing your iPod
- iPod Wizard
- This easy to use program will roll back the firmware version on your iPod with one click of a button.
Be carefull doing anything else with this program as you can fry your ipod.
Read the iPod Wizard forum for help with the program. - Hex Editors
- I tried both ways and liked actually editing the iPod's system file.
YOU MUST USE A HEX EDITOR TO CHANGE THE SYSINFO FILE
The Hex Editor Fix
- You need to open SysInfo in your hex editing program.
- I reccomend copying the SysInfo file to your desktop and editing that file then move it back to your iPod replacing the old SysInfo file.
- This is what needs to be changed
Replace the line that have the word "buildID" with this line:
buildID: 0x05108000 (6.1) - Save the file.
Move the newly changed SysInfo file back to your iPod replacing the old one. - Run the updater. After replacing the SysInfo file -or- running iPodWizard.
When you run the updater choose "upgrade" and NOT "restore." This is how you skirt around losing your music.
