"Joseph Campbell said the privilege of a lifetime is being yourself. That's his feeling. And I guess it's mine too." - Viggo Mortensen
Although he is known primarily as an actor, Viggo Mortensen is also a photographer, poet, spoken word artist, painter, occasional musician and is fluent in several languages.
If you didn't catch his fall 2008 release, APPALOOSA, a Western directed by and co-starring Ed Harris, you can now get it on DVD. Still in international release is the WWII-era film GOOD co-starring Jason Isaacs.
An adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD, originally slated for the fall of 2008 is now opening in late 2009.
Mortensen has expressed the opinion of late that he feels like taking a break from movies for a bit, but he is supposed to be appearing on stage (for the first time in 20 years) in Madrid Theatro's December 2009 production of "Purgatorio" alongside his ALATRISTE and APPALOOSA co-star Ariadna Gil.
Viggo celebrated his 50th birthday on October 20, 2008.

The play is entirely in Spanish but there is some talk about a potential English-language version sometime after this run closes.

Six Things You Might Not Know About Viggo
#1 -> He's fluent in several languages (English, Spanish, Danish) and conversant in a few more (French, Swedish, Italian, Norwegian), and worked as a translator at the 1980 Olympics. He was at the amazing hockey game where the U.S. beat Russia.#2 -> When his son Henry was growing up, he always had a clause added to his movie contracts that gave him Halloween off so that he could take his son trick-or-treating.
#3 -> He has a funky sense-of-humor and during the filming of the Lord of the Rings trilogy he did things like have his son duct tape the entirety of Orlando Bloom's trailer and spontaneously rugby-tackled co-star Sean Bean without warning.
#4 -> He bought the horse he rode as Aragorn in the LOTR movies, and the horse he rode in HIDALGO. No word yet if he brought another horse home after APPALOOSA.
#5 -> Viggo can stub out a cigarette on his tongue! You can see him do this a few times in the movie THE PASSION OF DARKLY NOON, he does it to a match after lighting a candle in A PERFECT MURDER, and he snuffs out a smoke in this fashion in EASTERN PROMISES.
#6 -> He goes barefoot whenever possible, having stated that when he wears shoes too much, it makes his back ache. Keep an eye out for how many reporters mention him being barefoot when they interview him.

Viggo is one talented man! I don't have any recollection of him putting out that cigarette with his tongue in Eastern Promises! Must have gotten distracted somehow. :) I've gotta get around to his books. Thanks for sharing.

Appalossa is a good movie! It was funny and Harris and Viggo made a good team. Harris sang the song in the end. He sings well! Of course, Jeremy Irons is a good bad guy. He is one of my favorites too. Renee looked funny I thought.
Thanks for all the good pictures of Viggo.

I'll take Viggo bearded or not. He makes a great cowboy. For me, I think it was true love when he bought his horses. I've always loved Harris. They look they a good team. Lots of great lines in the movie. I can hardly wait. :) Thanks for the lens!

That's so sweet about his son and Halloween! Love that kind of stuff. And definitely prefer clean-shaven Viggo over bearded. Yucky.
