The Viktualienmarkt is Munich's Magnificent City Centre Food Market

The Viktualienmarkt is a large outdoor food market and beer garden (biergarten) just a few hundred yards from Munich's bustling City Centre, Marienplatz (St Mary's Square.) Its name is derived from the Latin word, victuals, meaning food, and the German word markt, meaning market. There are well over a hundred stalls, selling every type of foodstuff you can imagine...and some you perhaps can't!

The Food Stalls in the Viktualienmarkt

A culinary paradise of choice and variety

Viktualienmarkt, MunichThe range of foodstuffs available to buy in the Viktualienmarkt is truly beyond spectacular. There are fruits and vegetables from around the world, the freshest of fish from the North Sea, as well as meats, breads and sweetmeats. Browsing the market when hungry can therefore be a dangerous experience as the temptation to buy some of the incredible fayre on offer can be overwhelming. There are also some stalls selling flowers, plants and arts and crafts products.

A Butcher's Shop...With a Big, Big Difference!

This is a horse butcher's...

Horse Butchers, Viktualienmarkt, MunichKaspar Woerle's butcher's shop on the edge of the Viktualienmarkt is one which I have passed on a great many occasions and one I have meant to visit for some time. I am delighted to say that during my most recent visit to Munich in September 2008 I finally arranged to do so.

This is a horse butcher's shop, and yes, that does mean that it sells horse meat! I had never before tasted horse meat but especially when I saw a sandwich board outside advertising, "Warmer Leberkas vom Pfend," warm horse meatloaf, (pictured below,) I knew it was time to taste it. I found the shop to contain a fantastic variety of horse meat (pferdefleisch) products of every general description...including more than thirty different types of sausage!

Warm Horse Leberkase on a Bread Roll

Traditional leberkase is something of which I am very fond so I was confident that I would enjoy the roll pictured above but even I was surprised to discover just how much! It was absolutely delicious and having finished it, I immediately purchased some fresh meat with which I could later make a horse stew. This, too, proved to be thoroughly enjoyable and the best way I can think of to describe the taste and texture is like a cross between beef and venison. If you find yourself in Munich, I can definitely recommend a visit to this shop and a sampling of some of its many different products.

The Viktualienmarkt Biergarten

A place to relax and unwind from your shopping rigours

Biergarten, Viktualienmarkt, MunichThe large biergarten in the centre of the Viktualienmarkt is the ideal place to take a break from your shopping or simply to sit and watch the world go by. The tables with table-cloths on them are table service - thus slightly more expensive - but taking a seat at one of the bare wooden tables allows you to fetch your own beer from one kiosk and something to eat from one of the many choices of food kiosks available. For some reason, I like to breakfast here, perhaps because it is generally quieter and easier to find a vacant table or space at same.
