Vince Flynn
This lens will be about my personal favorite author, Vince Flynn who is the author of many New York Times Bestselling books such as Consent to Kill, Term Limits, and most recently Protect and Defend.
As a child he fought to overcome his dyslexia which made reading and writing challenging for him, which made his current career choice as an author a very interesting choice. At first Flynn used his degree in economics to work the standard 9-5 for Kraft Foods until he decided to apply for a position in the United States Marine Corps. He was disqualified for medical reasons and resumed working a 9-5 for another company until he decided to pursue his desire to write a book, Term Limits.
As with many first time authors he got rejected from many different publishers but rather than continue the search for a publisher or scrap his book he actually decided to self publish his first book, a very uncommon move that typically doesn't yield good results. The book quickly climbed the ranks of the book critics and became a New York Times Bestseller, as did all of his Mitch Rapp books to follow. He was offered a job as a writer on the hit Fox tv series "24", my favorite show, but negiotiated with Fox to act as a consultant for the script instead. His most recent work (his ninth novel), Protect and Defend was published on October 30th of this year (2007).
His books are so successful due to the way that they truly immerse the reader with the perfect match of details and plot. It has really redefined the term "page turner" for me as I will sit down and read an entire novel in one sitting because I can't think of something I would rather do (this is coming from a teenage college kid in a dorm with 5 other people and 5 different video game consoles). The main reason why I love his novels so much is that they are a perfect mixture of action and storyline, there is enough action to keep you glued to the page but unlike most writers every action is in the book for a reason and may have a deeper impact later on in the novel or even the series. I consider myself to be an avid reader and I cannot possibly recommend an author's books anymore than those of Vince Flynn.

Consent to Kill
Description from Vince Flynn's publisher, Pocket Books.
Now, the powerful father of a dead terrorist demands vengeance in its simplest form--an eye for an eye, and Rapp instantly becomes the target of an international conspiracy. This time, he must use all of his vigilance and determination to save himself before he can turn his fury on those who have dared to betray him.
Consent to Kill takes readers behind the headlines and catapults them to the front lines of the global war on terror. It explores the minds of heroes willing to put their lives on the line for their country and probes the dark hearts of villains eager to sacrifice anyone and anything blocking their path to power. In Consent to Kill, America has never needed Mitch Rapp more.
Consent to Kill
Act of Treason
Description from Vince Flynn's publisher, Atria Books.
When presidential candidate Josh Alexander's motorcade is ambushed by a group of terrorists, the nation is thrown into turmoil. Two weeks following the attack, Alexander is carried to victory by a sympathy vote, but his assailants have not been found. On the surface it appears to be the work of al-Qaeda, despite the tremendous job that the U.S. and her allies have done eliminating terrorist cells within the heart of America. While the FBI and the rest of the government begin scouring the world for jihadists, CIA director Irene Kennedy and Special Agent Skip McMahon are presented with classified information so toxic that they consider destroying it altogether, as it contains intelligence pointing to some of the most powerful players in Washington.
Enter Mitch Rapp, the one man reckless enough to follow the evidence to its explosive conclusion. His journey takes him through the shadowy world of contract killers, into the darkest corners of the globe, and eventually back to Washington, where the fragile pillars of power are shaken to the core.

Protect and Defend
Description from Vince Flynn's website, vinceflynn.com
Enter Mitch Rapp, America's top counterterrorism operative. Used to employing deception, Rapp sees an opportunity where others see only Iranian reprisals that could leave thousands of Americans dead. Rapp convinces President Josh Alexander to sign off on a risky operation that will further embarrass the Iranian government and push their country to the brink of revolution. As part of the plan, CIA director Irene Kennedy is dispatched to the region for a clandestine meeting with Azad Ashani, her Iranian counterpart.
But Rapp isn't the only one hatching plans. Iran's President Amatullah has recruited Hezbollah master terrorist Imad Mukhtar to do his dirty work. For decades Mukhtar has acted as a surrogate for Iran, blazing a trail of death and destruction across the Middle East and beyond. When Kennedy's meeting with Ashani goes disastrously wrong, Rapp and Mukhtar are set on a collision course that threatens to engulf the entire region in war. With the clock ticking, Rapp is given twenty-four hours, no questions asked, to do whatever it takes to stop Mukhtar, and avert an unthinkable catastrophe.
