Welcome to The Wineries of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands!!

A day trip to local Peninsula Wineries on Vancouver Island started this passion of mine that I just had to share with you all!!

Always a lover of wine, fine and otherwise, I was completely entranced once I set foot on the gravel drive that led to my first Vancouver Island Winery experience.
This is how I wrote about that awe inspiring day on my blog, Plain Jane Ordinary...

Fruits of the Gods!!

Plain Jane Ordinary...Wine Notes for the Average Joe and Jane!!

Glorious Vancouver Island Wineries......Join me if you dare on a sunny afternoon in September for an enchanting trip around the Peninsula.

Warning...this is not for the feint of heart as it will elicit day dreaming, wishful thinking and an online search for Victoria airfares and accommodations!

The day...picture perfect, sky as blue as blue can be, sun warming the cockles of your heart, and a chipper, effervescent cruise director pouring Baileys at 10am...could life really get any better?

First stop....Starling Lane. Walking up the gravel drive en mass, in anticipation of what lies ahead, we just could not have been prepared for the splendour and natural beauty that unfolded before us. A sheer assault on your senses in the most fabulous of ways....colour, aroma, the sounds of a family at work and at play, barking dog welcoming committee...
oh and of course, the fowl of some sort that called the vineyard home.

Magical barely comes close to describing the scene....and then came the wine tasting.
Commencing with a sparkling slightly tinted a light and bright gold, danced off our tongues in the
morning sunlight..what a way to start the day.

And then a Port that cannot be called a Port because it is not a product of Portugal, but a Port just the same... and the angels sang...and well, we bought a bottle for Christmas morning!

Important note:
A person such as a Plain Janer could never hope to be able to truly describe an experience such as this and impart the true impact of it to their readers. This is something one must experience in person to fully understand and appreciate. To get close though...take the feelings you get when you see a vineyard in a movie, in a picture or on TV and multiply it by a million!

Back on the bus for a twisty ride along a narrow tree lined roadway, and our next destination appears without pomp or circumstance...Winchester Cellars.

Again greeted by another fine 4 legged friend, who loves to play ball by the way, and we get what essentially became the surprise of the day...GIN!!!! Music to this Martini lover's heart!

And, a ton of wine to taste...before lunch...oh goodness.
3 reds, 3 whites, and of course, I liked the red no one else did....what can I say, I was focused on the Gin :) Which is superb might I add, and a grand bottle came home with us.

Less than an hour later we are whisked off to our lunch destination, treated to a great feast of much needed and delicious crackers along the way, and our half hour drive to Deep Cove goes by in a heart beat.

Destination...Chalet Estate Winery.
Across the street from the water lies a mini Tuscany brilliant under the now warm and soulful afternoon sun...and lunch, at long last lunch!!!

During an amazing feast of wonderful salads, wraps and sandwiches we were treated to another flight of 3 reds and 3 whites including an endearing Pinot Gris that of course, found its' way into our bag of wine tour souvenirs!

After not enough time to bask in the lushness that made you want to take a nap in the sun, we are off to our final stop of the day, Matticks Farm.

Not a farm at all but a quaint and chic shopping destination with a lovely wine shop, interesting and original stores and a mini market that brought back memories of Granville Island...(BODG's favorite place)...more tastings!
By this time, PJ was pretty much Wined Out, and shared the little sips with her husband so as not to put a bad spin on an otherwise splendid day...but it did feel like nap time indeed!!

As soon as you possibly can, visit a Vancouver Island Winery. I wouldn't necessarily advise doing 4 in a day if it can be helped. We did so as this trip was a fund raiser in honour of the Sooke Philharmonic (not to be confused with Phil from Sooke and his Harmonica...joke credit to Starling)

Cheers!
Hope you enjoyed the ride..
PJ :)
PS..sadly, not a drop of wine was consumed during the writing of this article!

Judges Tasting Note: Dense and dark wine. Aromas leaped out of the glass in waves of blueberries, vanilla and mint with a sprinkle of white pepper. Well integrated toasty oak, supple tannins, backed with vibrant acidity. The palate was concentrated with flavours of cherries, blueberries, cinnamon and cream mingled with aniseed. A lingering essence of jasmine finished off this an elegant and beautiful example.

Cider

.... is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of apples mainly, though pears are also used;[1] in the UK, pear cider with no apple content is also known as perry. In the United States and parts of Canada, where the term cider almost exclusively refers to non-alcoholic apple juice (apple cider), the phrase hard cider is used to denote the fermented version.

While any variety of apple, and even other pome fruits such as pear or quince, may be used, certain cultivars are preferred in some regions, and may be known as cider apples. The drink varies in alcohol content from less than 3% ABV in French cidre doux to 8.5% ABV or above in traditional English ciders.

Cider is very popular in the United Kingdom, especially in South West England, in comparison to other countries. The UK has the highest per capita consumption as well as the largest cider producing companies in the world,[2] including H. P. Bulmer, the largest.[3] Overall, the UK produces 500 million litres (110 million imperial gallons) of cider per year.

The drink is also popular and traditional in Brittany (chistr) and Normandy (France) (cidre), Ireland and Asturias (sidra) and the Basque Country (sagardoa) of Spain and France. Pear cider is popular in Sweden and in Basse-Normandie (France) (poiré). The drink is making a resurgence in both Europe and the United States.

Keep it to one glass of red wine for heart health: study

Last Updated: Wednesday, February 13, 2008 | 9:53 AM ET

Red wine has been touted as beneficial for cardiovascular health, but new research suggests while one glass may be healthy, two or more could actually do more harm than good over time.

Previous studies have suggested light or moderate drinking has a protective effect on the heart, and red wine was singled out as having specific benefits.

The studies found lower rates of heart disease among some European populations that regularly consume red wine.

A new study by Toronto's Peter Munk Cardiac Centre found that a single glass of red wine did have potentially helpful effects. But it also found that after two glasses, test subjects' heart rates rose and their hearts began pumping more blood than necessary.

Dr. John Floras said it may be that over time, increasing the heart rate and increasing the pumping action of the heart might be partly why heavy drinking has been shown to have adverse effects.

The study's findings are in this month's issue of the American Journal of Physiology.

And in case you need a little more convincing....

Nature is just so stunning...

Ya gotta have at least one cool gadget!!

"Wine needs to breathe...
Wine which has been allowed to breathe tastes better. As wine breathes, it opens up, and releases its intended aromas and flavors. Traditionally, decanters were used to aerate wine. However, decanting is time consuming, cumbersome, and inconvenient.

Vinturi's patent pending design speeds up this process with ease and convenience. Perfect aeration in the time it takes to pour a glass.

all the taste with none of the wait
Simply hold vinturi over a glass and pour wine through. Vinturi draws in and mixes the proper amount of air for the right amount of time, allowing your wine to breathe instantly. You'll notice a better bouquet, enhanced flavors and smoother finish. It's that fast. It's that easy."
