What is nielloware?

Nielloware was probably introduced to Southern Thailand by Portuguese traders. For several centuries Nakhon Si Thammarat has been the center of Thailand's nielloware production.

A simple explanation: to create nielloware, a design is incised in silver (and sometimes gold). The background is then cut away and filled with an amalgam of darker metals. This creates a darker background against which the figures stand in relief.

Nielloware items include rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches and pins, bowls, boxes, pedestals, and trays.
