Vintage Tack

Every piece of antique tack has it's own story. Who owned and used it? Where and how was it used?

Such beautiful old pieces offer us a glimpse into our own history which we can see and feel. The wear and tear is proof of how important the horse and its tack were to daily life.

Today, many of these pieces are sought after by collectors. They are used as decorative accents and those of great quality are highly prized, commanding top dollar.

The Saddle...

Horses have been ridden since about 2000 BC. Saddles did not exist and horses were ridden bareback or with a small piece of cloth or hide.

The Moors of North Africa were among the first people to begin using saddles which were a simple form of padding to help make riding more comfortable.

Over time, saddles, in their many forms, became more common and more uniform as improvements such as stirrups and girths were added to provide additional comfort. These improvements also proved beneficial to the horse by improving health, longevity and usefulness.

The saddles we know today are vastly different. The western saddle in particular, with its spanish origins, has become one of the most elaborate saddles in the world.

Antique parade saddles and tack are highly sought after for their outstanding craftsmanship, ornate decorations and exquisite hand tooling.

Those which can still be found today in good condition often command top dollar.

Antique Spurs

Spurs were an important tool for the American Cowboy. They were handmade and came in many different shapes and sizes. Some were simple while others were very elaborate.
Because the spur was hand made, it was a personal item for the maker as well as the cowboy. For this reason, antique spurs are highly collectible.

Bridle Rosettes

Glass domed bridle rosettes were popular in the late 1800's to early 1900's.

Such rosettes were colorful pieces of artwork. Some were used for advertising.

They too were a personal item, adding a bit of glamour to an otherwise plain piece of tack.

Horse Collars and Hames

The horse collar may date back to as early as 220-265 AD, while the first indication of use of a yoke dates back to 477-499 AD. Collars were introduced to Europe by the 920s and by the 12th century, european farmers were ploughing using collars.

The collar was used to support metal or wooden hames which the traces of the harness were attached. Brass or Brass plated Hames were a functional yet decorative and eye catching piece of the harness and were often used for more formal events.
