Your fans are waiting!

You can't help but look and feel cute in an old-fashioned kitchen apron!

Vintage aprons are cute, collectible and homey as well as functional items to have in the kitchen.  Featured here are dozens of pretty vintage aprons that you can bid on or buy now from eBay, books and sewing patterns for making your own aprons, links to websites that sell vintage fabrics, books on collecting aprons, gifts and books for children and other nostalgic goodies! If you are browsing the Internet for a vintage apron, you have definitely come to the right place!

You might find kitchen aprons anywhere from the stylish 1930's to the funky 1970's on this popular lens (my apron selection varies almost day to day). There are several styles of old aprons here including country aprons, oilcloth aprons, western and rockabilly aprons made from a variety of material such as organdy, organza, flour sacks, cotton and silk. I also included a section that features aprons for men, and sewing patterns for men's aprons.

Most of the aprons featured on this lens are "hiphonest". The aprons here are stylish, and most were handmade a long time ago from feed sacks, old dresses or whatever poor folks had on hand; therefore, they are being reused by a different generation.

You can e-mail this popular lens to your antique-loving, retro-crazed friends so they can see the skads of vintage aprons featured here, and you can contact me to make a suggestion or just to say "hello". Feel free to sign the guestbook and let everyone know why YOU like vintage aprons! Vintage Springtime Aprons

Spring has finally officially sprung! I love spring! Is there anyone who doesn't love spring? This little group of aprons is all about pretty pastel colors, lightweight fabrics and girliness. I handpicked each of the aprons in this group (and had fun doing it) because I wanted to be certain each one was very spring-like. If you celebrate Easter, these aprons will look beautiful over your Easter Sunday dress in front of company or over a simple T-shirt and bluejeans while preparing the house and dinner for the Easter festivities. Even if you don't celebrate Easter, these aprons are a gorgeous addition to your springtime wardrobe, and they also make eggcellent gifts for Mother's Day!

Aprons With Graphic Art by Retro Loco!™

I've Been Naughty retro kitchen apron by Retro Loco! The apron on the right features a retro design inspired by old advertisements that I created for Christmas. This design reads, "I've Been 100% Super Duper Really Naughty", and it has bold colors and retro-style fonts. This nostalgic design reminds me of a vintage ad for a car or a kitchen appliance. Both of these aprons are made of a sturdy cotton/polyester blend twill fabric, are machine washable and have two center-stitched bottom compartment pouches for keeping utensils and recipes handy.

Retro Christmas kitchen apron by Retro Loco!Christmas is a time of year when people do a lot of cooking and baking, so it is a good time to wear kitchen aprons. Aprons with a Christmas theme are fun to wear, and both of the aprons shown here have retro artwork that is fun, colorful and nostalgic. The bright, bold graphics on old advertising signs from the forties and fifties inspired me to make these vintage-style Christmas designs. The design on the left reads, "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas", which is the title of one of my favorite Christmas songs (Dean Martin's version). If you click on the image, you will be taken to my online store where you can see a larger view of the design and its details, including snowflakes, a Santa hat and letters that look like candy canes.

Vintage Aprons Sold in Lots

(set #1)

Shown here are both vintage (old / used) and new, but vintage-inspired, aprons sold in lots. Imagine how FUN it would be to dig through a box full of aprons when the package arrives...kind of like Christmas day! How are you going to decide which apron to wear first?? If you do not see what you want here, just click on one of the images which will take you to eBay, then you can do a search once you get there. Try these search terms along with the word, "apron": retro, vintage, antique, kitchen, swiss dot, crochet, bark cloth, hostess, flour sack, old-fashioned, primitive, home-spun, organza. For example, type in: hostess apron

If you do not see the type of apron you are looking for, you can always click on any one of these aprons, which will take you directly to eBay, then you can do your own search to see thousands of aprons. A search using the words, "retro apron" usually yields new aprons, not old ones, which is why new aprons often appear in this section.

Vintage Oilcloth Aprons on eBay **NEW Section!**

(set #3)

Because oilcloth is waterproof (or semi-waterproof), these aprons are perfect for doing chores where a lot of water is splashed such as bathing a child or pet, gardening and washing a car. (they are also really colorful and cute!)

Oilcloth was, traditionally, heavy cotton or linen cloth with a linseed oil coating: it was semi-water-proof. The most familiar use was for brightly printed kitchen tablecloths. Dull colored oilcloth was used for bedrolls, sou'westers, and tents. By the late 1950's, oilcloth became a synonym for vinyl (polyvinyl chloride) bonded to a flanneled cloth. (From Wikipedia)

Vintage Americana Aprons

(set #4)

Using the search terms, "Americana apron" can yield all kinds of results. Sometimes other items such as a cookie jar will come up in a search for Americana aprons.  The cookie jars are cute, but if you only want to see actual aprons that you can wear, then try a search such as this:  "Americana apron -jar" or "Americana apron -jar, -cookie" (do not type the quotation marks).

Jessie Steele Aprons

(set #5)

Jessie Steele aprons are known for nostalgic fabrics in bright colors and perky prints. Having the same charm as those kitschy aprons worn by cheerful housewives in the 1950's, these retro aprons make quite a fashion statement worn in the kitchen or worn over your favorite pair of bluejeans while out shopping!

Vintage Flour Sack and Feed Sack Aprons on eBay

(set #6) Note: Aprons do not always appear in this section. Availability varies almost daily.

Sometimes you get better search results by spelling words different ways (even if one spelling is incorrect) which is why you might see "Floursack Aprons" and/or "Flour Sack Aprons" listed here. Anyway, I LOVE these aprons! I have a few aprons that my grandmother made out of her flour sacks and feed sacks many years ago. Poor people and thrifty people made clothing, pillows, aprons, quilts and no telling what else out of the cloth sacks their flour and feed came in.

These aprons are cute, colorful and collectible little gems! I think flour sack and feed sack aprons must be the rarest of vintage aprons. Some days aprons appear in this section, and some days they do not. If you do not see any aprons here, just keep checking back to see if any have been listed by an eBay seller.

Silk and Silk-Trimmed Aprons on eBay

(set #7) Beautiful and Unusual Aprons Made of Silk or Silk Trim

Doing a search for "silk apron" on eBay returns some interesting results. I found some unique vintage aprons made in Italy and France -- some dating back to the roaring twenties. To see more, just click on any eBay apron image you see here, then type in the words, "silk apron" (without the quotes) in eBay's search box and see all the gorgeous silk aprons and other garments. You will be surprised at the results!

Please keep in mind that what you see here today might be gone tomorrow (or even in a few minutes), so if you see an apron here that you like, click on it to go to eBay.com, then you can either bid on the apron, or if you are not ready to bid, just click on the words, "Watch this item" near the top right, then you will be prompted to log in to your account, and you will then be notified by e-mail when bidding time is almost up on that item. Good luck bidding!

Organza Aprons on eBay

(set #8)

For those of you who might not know, organza is a light-weight, sheer fabric with a bit of a shimmer to it and is very pretty and feminine! Aprons made of organza are not meant to be workhorses, but are more for making you look and feel pretty and fashionable! Vintage organza aprons are very collectible. I never wear mine, I just like to display them on a peg board wall in my kitchen.

Organdy Aprons on eBay

(set #9)

Organdy aprons are made from a sheer feminine fabric, and they look beautiful hanging around in an old farmhouse kitchen or Victorian kitchen. Heck, these little cuties look great anywhere and can turn a drab home into a very romantic one.

These cutesy aprons are terrific birthday and housewarming presents for suzy homemaker-type girls or for any woman who has an interest in collecting old household items. These darling aprons also make nice wedding shower and unique hostess gifts. A frilly apron could also be part of a halloween costume -- just use your imagination and have fun! You could dress up as a "Not-So-Innocent Housewife" and put on some stilettos, an apron and fishnet stockings (don't forget to put on something underneath the apron). Carry around your trick-or-treat bag in one hand and a pink feather duster in the other and off you go!!

Aprons in the Home

A little apron history...

Woman in 1920's wearing apronThe apron was traditionally viewed as an essential garment for anyone doing housework. Cheaper clothes and washing machines made aprons less common beginning in the mid 1960s in some countries such as the United States. However, the practice of wearing aprons remains strong in many places.

Apron backToday, the apron has enjoyed a minor renaissance in terms of both women and men now wearing them when performing household chores. For instance, an article in the Wall Street Journal claimed in 2005 that the apron is "enjoying a renaissance as a retro-chic fashion accessory" in the United States[1]. However, it still is not as prevalent as it was prior to the 1960s.

Aprons are nowadays considered equally appropriate for both women and men by most people. However, prevailing social norms ensure that women frequently wear more delicate clothing, and may therefore be more likely to want the protection an apron offers.

When domestic workers are supplied a uniform by their employers, an apron is often included. The aprons are worn for hygienic as well as for identification purposes. Read the entire Wikipedia article

Feather Dusters (and other cleaning tools) for Play and Work

Aprons and feather dusters, they just seem to go together!

Like it or not, the image of a woman wearing a feminine apron while doing the dusting has become both a European and American icon. Shown here are some feather dusters that are meant to be part of a costume, and some of these are heavy duty industrial type dusters that will help get your house sparkling clean. Don't forget to wear that sexy vintage apron while doing your chores!

Taking Care of Your Vintage Aprons

Your vintage aprons probably do not have care labels sewn into them, so please give your little treasures lots of TLC, and click on the link a little further down to read about the proper way to wash vintage clothing, including aprons.

Here are a few pointers I thought of for taking care of your vintage aprons:

  • Never have your vintage aprons dry cleaned, unless there happens to be a care label on the garment that specifically states to have the garment dry cleaned. Dry cleaning can weaken the fibers of some vintage fabrics, and it can also fade or cause ugly spots on the fabric.

  • Never hang any type of wet garment to dry if it is a stretchy fabric such as a crocheted apron. Wet yarn and some other fibers will stretch out from here to kingdom come if they are hung while wet, so it is best to lay them out flat on an old towel or sweater dryer.

  • Remember to keep any vintage textile away from bright light.

  • Never store any type of vintage fabrics near a heat source.

  • Never store vintage fabrics in a basement or other high-humidity environment.

  • If you fold vintage aprons or clothing, do not store them this way, because they can end up with permanent crease marks. Instead, you can lay the apron flat on a sheet of acid-free tissue paper, smooth out the wrinkles with your clean hands, then place another sheet of tissue on top of the apron, then roll this entire little sandwich-looking thing up (do not roll tightly), then store with your other linens in a dark closet or drawer.

  • Another good way to store vintage aprons and table linens is to roll them up on a cardboard tube such as a tube from the inside of a roll of paper towels or wrapping paper. You might want to wrap some acid free tissue paper around the tube first, then roll up the apron and cover the apron with another layer of tissue or a clean pillowcase to keep light and dust off the apron. I have to give credit for this tip to my late mother who probably got it from Heloise! Thanks Mom!

  • One other thing I must mention, is that cats LOVE strings! My cats go NUTS when they see any type of string, and it amazes me to see how amazed and amused a cat gets over something as silly as a darn string....amazing! Make sure Fluffy is not even in the room while you are handling an apron, or else the apron strings will become a toy, and your cat will shred the strings with its claws or practice dental hygiene by flossing its teeth with the strings! Yuck!!!

WARNING: Any type of string can be harmful and even fatal to an infant, toddler, bed-confined adult or to an animal, so please do not leave an infant, toddler, bed-confined adult or an animal unattended with any type of string! Thanks!
Click Here to Learn How to Wash Vintage Clothing and Aprons
This site gives instructions on how to wash vintage clothing in general, but these instructions can also be applied to vintage aprons.

One thing I would like to add to their instructions is to NEVER allow any vintage garment to soak in water! The dye in vintage fabrics will bleed all over the place and leave your garment looking faded, or worse, with streaks and spots!

Items to Help with Washing Your Vintage Aprons

Proper washing and drying of your vintage aprons will prolong the life of your treasured keepsakes. Here are a few old-fashioned items to help you out on wash day. Woolite has a light, clean scent and is very delicate on fabrics. It is important to air dry most vintage aprons and linens by hanging them up or laying them out flat to dry, so I have included a clothes drying rack, some clothespins and a clothespin bag here.

Customer Review by crafty in california: Quote: This delightful book is a unique keeper. It is a visual treat of reproduction fabric projects. The spiral bound design makes it special and so easy to read as the pages lie flat. The cardboard templates easily punch out and don't need to be cut. My first project will be the 1930's style Etta's apron which also includes a paper pattern. A nice touch is the appropriate quilting design or a chicken or rooster located at the page number.
