TheVintagePaperGuy ~ the vintage paper items you remember from long ago . . .

Message from TheVintagePaperGuy:

Thank you for your interest in TheVintagePaperGuy. It is my goal to become the number one source for vintage paper collectibles on the world wide web. Although I am just opening this independent web store in 2009, I have been actively involved with selling vintage collectibles online on eBay since Feb. 1997, into my 13th year.

I will do my best to offer vintage paper collectibles at reasonable prices and with complete customer satisfaction in mind. Please bear with me as I stock the site.

I have been a collector & dealer of collectables of all sorts since 1979 . . . wow that's 30 years! I have gone from selling at shows and flea markets to operating stores, from brick and mortar to having my own eBay store. I am constantly on the look out for paper collectibles, odds and ends, and anything interesting.

I am always on the hunt for that unusual, rare or hard to find item for my buyers. If you don't see what you collect, just ask! And, if you are looking for certain items for your collection, feel free to email me your want list! I will be on the lookout for things for you too.

Check back often as new items are added daily. I will also be adding extra features over the next few months, so remember to bookmark my site on your favorites and come back regularly.

Your Guide to Post Cards . . .

Types of PostCards . . .

The following is an overview of the types of postcards.

The Pioneer Era (1893-1898) . . .
This era began at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in May, 1893. All cards of this era have undivided backs, and many will have the words, "Souvenir of%u2026" or "Greetings from%u2026" on the card. Many postcards of this era are multiple view cards.

Private Mailing Card Era (1898-1901) . . .
Beginning May 19, 1898, printers were allowed, by act of congress, to print postcards marked "Private Mailing Card" inscribed on the back, and are referred to by many collectors as PMC's. The back was used strictly for the address. There was often a blank area left on the front, or picture side, for a message.

Undivided Back Era (1901-1907) . . .
Starting December 4, 1901, publishers were allowed to use the word POSTCARD on the back. These cards have an undivided back, and only the address was allowed on the back of the card (which explains why so many cards from this era have writing on the front).

Divided Back Era (1907-1915) . . .
This era of postcards came into existence on March 1, 1907. The divided back allowed writing on the back of the card for the first time, with a vertical line on the back, with the area to the right of the line for the address, and the area to the left for a message. Usually, the image of the postcard fills the entire card with no white border.

White Border Era (1915-1930) . . .
These cards ware easily distinguished by the white border around the pictured area. During this period, cards were printed with a border around the picture, to save ink. Quality during this era was often not up to the earlier standards.

Linen Era (1930-1945) . . .
Linen postcards feature linen-like paper that contains a high rag content (look for a woven or criss-cross pattern in the paper).

Chrome Era (1939 to Present) . . .
Modern chromes, as they are now called, have beautiful chrome colors. Publishers of these postcards include Mike Roberts, Dexter Press, Curt Teich, and Plastichrome, and more.

Real Photo postcards (1900 to present) . . .
These cards are printed on photo paper, and usually show the process by which it was printed around the stamp box on the back (ex: AZO, EKC, KODAK, VELOX, KRUXO, etc.) For more information, see the Real Photo Postcards section below.

RPPC ~ Real Photo Post Cards . . .

There is some confusion on what Real Photo postcards are and how to identify them. Real Photo postcards are Black and White photographs that were reproduced by actually developing them onto photographic paper the same size and weight of postcards with a postcard back. There are many postcards that reproduce photos by various printing methods that are not real photos, the same methods used when reproducing photos in magazines and newspapers.

The best way to tell the difference is to look at the postcard with a magnifying glass. If the photo is printed, you will see that it is made up of a lot of little dots, the same as a newspaper printed photo. A real photo postcard is solid, with no dots.

Most real photo postcards have identifying marks on the back, usually in the stampbox corner, that identifies the manufacturer of the photographic paper. You can figure our the approximate age of the RPPC by knowing when the paper manufacturer was in business. Real Photo Post Cards are still being made today by Kodak,
