Vintage Signs
Vintage advertising signs have become a very popular area of collecting. I will try and bring you some of the history and art involved with these signs on this page. Some of the most popular vintage signs today are the vintage gas and oil signs along with vintage automobile signs. Of course the soda signs from Coca Cola,Pepsi, A&W and many more remain high on the list with many collectors of vintage signs. A good number of artists got their start painting or drawing advertising signs.
Vintage Sign History
Commercial ads have been found in ancient Arabia. The Egyptians used papyrus to make sales ads and wall posters,while lost and found ads on papyrus was common in ancient Rome and Greece. Wall and rock painting was another method of early advertising, which is still seen in parts of Asia, Africa and South America. As the printed page began in the 15th and 16th century, ads started to include handbills. Ads began to appear in newspapers in England during the 17th century. Advertising collectibles covers a very large area in collecting today. About anything you can think of has been used to send a message to customers, from ink pens to painting a sign on a rock. - I'm not a collector, but I'm interested in finding out more about the subject as I make fridge magnets...which I hope ARE collectible. At least, that is one of my selling points.
