A Closer Look at The Vintage Skateboard from the 1960's to the 1980's

If you lived in Southern California anywhere from the 60's to the 80's and were a teen or had a teen around that time period, chances are you know about the Vintage Skateboard. My name is Brian Garvin and was born and raised in Yuppieville Orange County, CA. Born in the city of orange, then moved out to Placentia, you were a dead duck as a young teenager if you had a bogus skateboard. I had a Powell Peralta Ray "Bones" Rodriguez board, the ruby colored one with the skull in the middle of it. Had this Vintage Skateboard for 5 straight years.

I remember how fun it was riding our Vintage Skateboard in the Irrigation Ditches and gully, before they turned the gully into apartments, but by that time I was no longer living in the area. During the summer it was usually very dry, so we cleared out the brush and and had fun down there for hours. There was also a Big-O Skateboard Park out there which we went to a lot. They had some of the biggest pools and you really had to have a big set of gonads to skate those.

I'm not gonna say I was one of the best, but I did come out a big winner. That's because I enjoyed by Vintage Skateboard for 5 straight years up until I graduated from High School and went into the Marines. We skateboarded everywhere we went just about, even to school. And at local parties in Corona and Riverside which was where I lived when I was in High School, my friends and I did have the chance to meet some of the best Skateboarders around.

I personally liked the wider boards myself, although I knew some friends that did some amazing stunts on some of the narrower skateboards. The wider Vintage Skateboards seemed to give me a lot more traction and a lot more momentum. I remember one time there was this real steep hill. My friend and myself sat down on our skateboards, crossed legs and went down together. I thought my heart was gonna lodge right out of my mouth. Luckily we made it.

Weren't those the days. If you've owned or used a Vintage Skateboard, you definitely know what I'm talking about. Hopefully you'll share your thoughts on your Skateboarding experiences below and help keep the Vintage Skateboard dream alive. I live in Oceanside, CA. now, and I still regret sometimes that I wasn't born in Santa Cruz! You all know that Vintage Skateboarding is the bomb. Also feel free to link to some of your Vintage Skateboard Decks, I'd love to see them! Also when you're a kid ride skateboards until you are blue in the face, but make sure that after you graduate you take steps to become a productive member of society. This means going to Trade School, attending one of the many Vocational Technical Schools or going to College.

Some Great Vintage Skateboard History.

Learn How The Southern California Skateboard Scene Came to be...

  • In 1976 the Powell Corporation was originated. This was when the Quicksilver deck was first marketed and open to the public.
  • In 1977 the first Bones Brigade wheels started being sold. Ray "Bones" Rodriguez was the board I actually owned. Imagine that.
  • In 1978 Powell and Peralta teamed up and formed what everyone knows now as Powell Peralta.
  • In 1978, the popularity of Vans Shoes explodes around this time as well.
  • In 1982 the first Powell Video was launched and was a smash hit among the young crowd of the early 80's. People who were in the video included Eddie Reategui, Steve Steadham and Kevin Staab.

My son has a vintage skateboard built for him at a skateboard shop in the San Fernando Valley in 1986. We are trying to recall where he had it built. Can't recall the name of the shop or the exact location. He and I think it was a shop somewhere in Chatsworth - he says on Chatsworth Street and I say, impossible, had to be Devonshire Street, while his brother says it was built at a shop on Chatsworth Street in Granada Hills. If it was built in any of these locations, they no longer exist. We simply cannot recall where this board was built and it is bugging me! I don't think we still have the receipt - if so, it is packed away somewhere in storage! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
