A Dark & Deceivingly Simple Story

"Violent Cases" is the disturbingly beautiful graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean.

The Story:

A young man remembers his encounter with an osteopath who once treated Al Capone and begins the sort out the reality of his world from the perceived memories of the child he once was.

The Essence:

Dave McKean's art is a juxtapostion of light and dark, focused and dreamlike, reality and suppostion - often within a single illustration. His depth of meaning and symbolism weave together Gaiman's story, which itself is by turns a sharp reality and sentimental memory that winds between the illustrations.
There are intentional hints throughout of the story being somewhat autobiographical, the protagonist even resembling Gaiman as a child and as a man.
The story resonates and teases so cleverly that the reader is left with more story left untold afterward than what was actually down on paper.
