Stephane Grappelli was the father of the jazz violin.
Stephane Grapelli was originally a pianist, but found his voice with the violin and led the way during a career as THE jazz violinist. Largely paired with guitarist Django Reinhardt until the latter's death in 1953, Grappelli continued to play into the 1990's and amazed all who heard him with his unparalleled virtuosity.

Stéphane Grappelli (26 January 1908 - 1 December 1997) was a French jazz violinist who founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France with guitarist Django Reinhardt. It was one of the first (and arguably the most famous) of all-string jazz bands.
