About Covenant House

Before we continue with how to support this project, we are going to take a look at who we are helping.

You may be wondering, Who Is Covenant House? The following will share what they do, where they are located, what programs they offer to youth, and specific programs offered in the Houston Texas location.

What Do They Do

"Need to Talk? Call Nineline 1-800-999-9999"

Covenant House provided residential and non-residential services to more than 60,000 youth in FY06. More than 15,000 young people came into Covenant House Crisis Shelters and Rights of Passage Programs while another 17,000 young people received assistance in Community Service Centers. Covenant House Street Outreach teams made contact with an additional 28,000 homeless and at-risk youth on the streets in the 21 cities where Covenant House operates facilities.

Where Are They

Covenant House International has facilities in 21 cities throughout the United States, Canada, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua.

Covenant House International sites are located in Anchorage, Atlanta, Atlantic City, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Guatemala City, Los Angeles, Managua, Mexico City, Newark, New Orleans, New York, Oakland, Orlando, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Tegucigalpa, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington, D.C.

Covenant House Programs

Food, clothing, shelter for a night: given freely, with no questions asked, no strings attached, for any hurting, homeless youth who will knock on our door tonight.

"Programs" is just another way of saying that we promise to keep loving these children unconditionally, because a covenant never quits, never fails, and never stops believing in the future.

An organization like Covenant House is only as good as what goes on face to face between youth and staff members. Once a youth decides to stay with us, our staff begins the hard, day-to-day work of building a plan for the future with each resident.

Sometimes the result is the absolute heartache of losing a kid back to the street. Sometimes, the result is the rebirth of a young life society had long left for dead.

About The Houston Covenant House Location
Covenant House Texas

Founded in Houston in 1983, Covenant House Texas provides emergency shelter, crisis intervention, transitional housing and community-based services to homeless, runaway, throwaway, and at-risk youth under the age of 21.

*Crisis Care

This 80-bed emergency shelter is available on a 24-hour basis to youth in need. The shelter provides a safe place where young people's basic, immediate needs can be met.

*Street Outreach

Covenant House counselors offer food, clothing, counseling, and workshops to street kids. Walk-in services are available to youth who are not yet ready to enter our residential program

*Health Care Services

Life on the streets makes youth highly susceptible and exposes them to a variety of illnesses and injuries. On-site clinics provide free health care services to homeless youth. Mental health and substance abuse counseling also is available.

*Educational Services

On-site educational resources include General Equivalency Diploma classes, vocational guidance and life skills workshops. Young mothers are taught skills to enable successful parenting.

*Rights of Passage

Rights of Passage provides long-term residential support and prepares young adults for independent living.

Several Ways To Participate...

Which of the following ways can you participate in this Charity Drive for Covenant House?

Monetary Donations will benfit all locations (the organization will use the funds as they are most needed). The Virtual Quilt Project (the Poster we will deliver) is going to the Houston Covenant House. I will be able to track most of the participation (Direct Donations are not trackable UNLESS Covenant House steps up and gives us a report- But, I'm Not Sure They are able to track directly from THIS LENS)... Sorry for not answering your question more clearly. Hope this helps.

What we are certain of....

How To - Create A Virtual Quilt Block

This section will discuss steps and available options to create a virtual quilt block and apply it to your lens.

How To Create A Virtual Quilt Block

There are dozens of ways to create a virtual quilt block. Here are only a few ways to give you some ideas.

Remember: Simply... Your Introduction Module Image can "BE" The Virtual Quilt Block for the Virtual Quilt.
So please don't let all of this 'detail' keep you from joining the group.
How To Join The Group
Add your lens to the Virtual Quilt Block Lens Entry module (below).
Then, Join the Group by submiting your lens to
GypsyOwl's Art Workshop

FIRST: The foundation of a virtual quilt block is an image. You may create art, photography, collage, a drawing, or even use an actual quilt block for this foundation. The block can be a message of caring, a photo of your favorite landscape, or a drawing of a heart for example. You decide. The only limitation is that the image is original (that you own the copyright).

NEXT: You will want to get the image onto your computer and then onto the lens. The following will show you how.

* Scan an original design and save a .jpg image. A great How To is Easy Designs to Make With Your Scanner.

* If you have a CafePress shop, create your design and use the Framed Tile Box product design. Then right click on the image and 'save picture as' to save it to your computer. Then upload it to the introduction module of your new Virtual Quilt Block Lens.

* If you have original art, photography, or graphic designs; You can use your image software. Resize them to 150px X 150px and save as .jpg , then upload them into the introduction module of your Virtual Quilt Block Lens.
OR
Upload them to your flicker account and use the hosting link to display your block like this...

OR use the flicker module to display your quilt block (The example "Virtual Quilt Block Set" below - is a flicker module using the slideshow display option).

OR Host your image online and use html to display it on your lens.
Basic HTML for Squidoo can show you how.

If you have other ideas, please tell us about it in the GuestBook.

Framed Tile or Framed Tile Keepsake Box

Virtual Quilt Block designs have been applied to a fabulous Framed Tile and Framed Tile Keepsake Box. The Keepsake Box can be designed in black frame or mohaganny frame. The frame creates a border on your virtual quilt block. These keepsake boxes make exceptional gifts & 50% of the net proceeds from your purchase will be donated to the Virtual Quilt Block Project fund raiser!

Charity Quilting Organization Challenge

The following organizations create quilts to donate to charities. This is a challenge for each of the following organizations to match block for block every virtual quilt block entered into the Virtual Quilt Project.

Make Virtual Quilt Blocks (as outlined above) or create REAL Quilts for this project.

When REAL Quilt Blocks / Quilts are created, each organization will have the option of donating completed quilts (or blocks) to the Covenant House in their area, or raise funds (auction, raffle, etc) to donate to the Covenant House directly.

If you are a member of an organization who makes quilts for charity, or you know of an organization dedicated to this cause, please invite them to participate and add them here. Let's get them in on this challenge and double our efforts toward the goal.
