Cool Teen or Pre-Teen Gift: Your Kid's Name As An Internet Domain
www.mykidsname.com - Grab Their Name Before It's Gone!
- Register Your Kid's Name as a URL with GoDaddy
- When my son was still a teenager, I reserved his name as a URL... figuring some day he'd be able to use it, either for business or for fun. I knew if I waited until he wanted it himself, someone else would have grabbed it in the meantime. A couple of years ago, he started pointing his domain name to his blog. ***This is such a cool gift for around ten bucks a year.
SEE BELOW for a quick lesson on (1) how to "POINT" your new domain name to a blog, lens or free website - and (2) how to set up your FREE EMAIL account with GoDaddy. - Add A Blog Your Kid Can Easily Make
- Typepad blogs are easy to work with and very inexpensive. My son and I both have Typepad blogs. My son's old enough to pay for his own blog now... but I still re-register his domain name as a Christmas gift each year... as I've been doing for 7 years now. Here's his URL which he points to his blog: www.iancasey.com.
- Sign Your Kids Up for Their Own Squidoo Lenses
- Squidoo lenses are free! And you can make as many as you want... free. Just point your kid's domain name to the lens. You can do this easily right in GoDaddy (see below for instructions).
- Site Build It - The Easy Way to Make a Website
- If your kid is interested in a topic in some depth, or wants to generate online income, a Site Build It website could be the answer. Great manual, loads of bells and whistles for the same fee. Site Build It is easy to work with, too.
How to "Point" A Domain Name to Your Blog, Lens or Website
Quick GoDaddy "Pointers"
Imagine the fun your kid will have using an email address based on his OWN domain name.
First, set up an account and register your kid's www domain with GoDaddy (or your own, for that matter).
Then set up your lens, blog or free website - with its "real" longer name - (it'll usually include http://www. plus blogspot, squidoo, typepad, homestead, etc. plus your specific name) and make sure it's "live" (published to the internet).
To "point" your shorter www name to your longer real name, head back over to DoDaddy. At GoDaddy, log in to your account with your user ID and password, click on "My Account" and then on "Manage Domains."
Check the domain name you wish to point (forward) to your lens, blog or website and then click on "Domain Forwarding."
Check "Enabled" and "Moved Permanently" (you can unforward later, if needed). Then type your entire Squidoo or blog address in the "Forward To" box (including the http://). On Squidoo, it will be http://www.squidoo.com/(insert your lens name). Click "Okay" and you're done!
Setting Up Your Domain's FREE Email Account in GoDaddy
Where you see "Free Email with Domain," click on "Use Credit."
Highlight (click) the domain name you want to activate for your email address. Click the "Continue" button. It'll now show as a "New Account."
Click on "Manage Account." The Email Control Center opens in a new window. Where you see "Free email addresses for mynewdomain.com, click the "ADD" button.
Enter the prefix you want in the box (could be your name, sales, info, etc. - however you want this email address to read: myname@mynewdomain.com, or info@mynewdomain.com).
Enter your password twice. (Don't forget to write your password where you'll readily find it... or use one that's easily remembered... you'll need it to access your mailbox.)
Keep the defaults for the other questions (i.e., don't enter anything else). Hit the "OK" button.
To access your mailbox, on the Email Control Center page, for the email address you just set up, click on the "Envelope" icon. This launches your webmail box.
Bookmark it to find it easily in the future. When you click on your bookmark, you'll be asked for the email address and password. Enter them both and hit "Login."
