Jeffrey's Bay was initially settled in the mid 1800's by the senior partners of Jeffrey & Glendinnings who opened a small store in the sheltered bay of the Eastern Cape. The store attracted more people who also settled in the area, and "Jeffrey's" bay went from raw coastline to a small, rurally populated fishing town.

It remained that way until the 1960's when youth started flocking to the area for the sand and surf. Since then, the once sleepy town has exploded into one of the fastest growing urban areas in South Africa and one of the top 5 surfing destinations in the world. J-Bay is also home to the annual Billabong Pro surfing tournament.

The Supertubes is regarded as the best part of the wave because it breaks for 300m or more, allowing for some serious wave time.
