Italy occupies a long, boot-shaped peninsula, surrounded on the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the east by the Adriatic Sea.
Italy currently has the fourth largest population in the European Union, and the 22nd largest population in the world, and is home to the greatest number of World Heritage Sites (41) of any country to date.
Several islands form part of Italy - the largest of which are Sicily and Sardinia. There are several active volcanoes in Italy of which Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe and Vesuvius, the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe. Tourism is very important to the Italian economy with over 37 million tourists a year. Italy is currently ranked as the fifth major tourist destination in the world.

Rome has been for centuries the center of Western civilization, and is the seat of the Catholic Church.Rome, Italy's most important city is crammed full of spectacular landmarks and monuments including The Colosseum, The Pantheon, The Forum, Farnese Palace and The Domus area, site of Emperor Nero's grand palace.
Rome enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. For almost a thousand years, Rome was the most politically important, richest and largest city in the Western world, and remained so after the Roman Empire started to decline.
