Discover Cyprus

Legend has it that Cyprus was the playground of the gods, and it is easy to see why.

Cyprus is a beautiful island to visit and explore at any time of the year.

Cyprus For All Seasons

Cyprus has a long, colorful history and has been ruled, at various times, by the Phoenicians, Assyrinas, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, French, Venetians, Ottomans, and British, each leaving behind something of their culture, making Cyprus the unique blend that it is today.

Cypriot people are renowned for being both outgoing and hospitable. Always ready to have a good time, Cypriots like nothing more than enjoying themselves in company, along with plenty of food and drink.

From the beautiful beaches surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the majestic beauty of the Troodos mountain range, Cyprus is an island of contrasts with a long tradition of hospitality.

The major towns embrace modern life and offer plenty to see and do for all ages, even outside of the summer months. For those looking for a more seated break, the countryside is dotted with small villages where time seems to have stood still and the old folk sit outside coffee shops watching the world go by.

Lefkosia (Nicosia), the island's capital is at the heart of the island and like much of Cyprus, it is a fascinating blend of old and new. Much of the old city has been renovated in recent years and is contained within giant 16th century Venetian walls. Plentiful pavement cafes keep cafe culture well and truly alive here, along with a broad selection of cultural attractions, from museums to theatres to art galleries.

While the coastal towns of Lemessos (Limassol), Larnaka and Pafos (Paphos) are more focused on summer activities, they nevertheless offer plenty to do in the cooler months. Many of the island's major ancient sites are located near these towns and offer fascinating insights into the past. Visitors shouldn't miss the extensive ruins of Kourion to the west of Lemesos, Hala Sultan Tekke near Larnaka, or the extensive Archaeological Park and Toms of the Kings in Pafos. In fact, so impressive are the historical sites of Pafos that the entire town has been added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List!

Cyprus may have a long history, but it is also a high-tech business center at the cutting-edge of modern technology. Given the island's advantegeous position on the border between Europe and the Middle East, its excellent air links with the region, and the exceptional IT infrastructure, many international businesses have established operations here.

Getting Around

The relatively short distances between major towns and attractions make Cyprus the ideal place to go exploring. Regular bus services operate between the major towns and coastal resorts along with further services to the rural communities. Taxies are commonplace and offer a relatively inexpensive means of getting from A to B. Coach excursions are a popular way of seeing the major local attractions, while many tourists choose to hire cars or motorcycles to explore the island at their own pace.

Shopping Around

Cyprus is a fantastic destination for those seeking a little retail therapy. From traditional handicrafts to the most popular designer labels, it's the prfect place to pick up that one-off Christmas gift or memento. Visit the large towns and you'll find outlets for most major international brands. Head off the beaten track and you'll be able to choose from a broad selection of silver, copper, and ceramices, along with the unique Lefkaritika lace. Leather goods are also a popular choice with visitors, along with eye-wear, watches and jewellery.
