Islands in Malaysia

It would be an impossible task to describe every one of Malaysia's thousands of beautiful beaches. Ranging from the powdery stretches of sand that characterize the eastern coastline of Peninsular Malaysia to the black sand beach of Pantai Pasir Hitam and the smooth pebble beach of Pantai Batu Kerikil, Malaysia's shores offer more idyllic locales than one could explore in many lifetimes. In addition to the plenitude of beaches along the the peninsula and the coast of Eastern Malaysia, the country also possesses over a hundred tropical islands. Many of these are so beautiful as to have entered into legend centuries ago, like the islands of Langkawi remain desert isles, marked , or Pulau Tioman. Others only by the imprint of the South China Sea on their sands.

Despite such abundance and variety, Malaysia's beaches are noticeably different from those in other parts of the world. They are often less differentiated from the shoreline than those of the Caribbean, for example, tending instead to be almost nestled up against the lush forests that this nation is famous for. The color palette is different as well--golden sands and emerald waters imbue Malaysian beaches with an air of succulent sweetness that isn't found in the cool whites and blues of many western strands. The result is that these beaches impart a very different sensation, a sense of languid peace and a distinct feeling that the division between land and sea is less a sharp line than a smooth continuum.

This continuity is noticeable in Malay culture as well. Kelongs, the traditional villages of coastal Malaysia, are built out over the water on stilts, reversing the usual notion of a beach view. Exploring the waters of Malaysia can produce a similar sense that the sea rather than the land is dominant here--cruising among the islands of Langkawi or those off Johor, for example, or scuba diving and snorkeling among the country's many world-class reefs.

Visiting the Malaysia islands on the west coast is best done on your way or coming from Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia has two seasons, a dry and a wet season. The rainy season in West Malaysia is from November to February but funny enough this is the main Malaysia holiday season. It is not raining the whole day in this time of the year. In fact, most of the time it's dry but you can expect showers.

Pangkor

About Pangkor

Pangkor Island is a popular island destination for local and Singapore holiday makers also one of the most enchanting islands in the world today. It gets extremely busy during school and public holidays. One operator on the island reported that approximately 2000 holidaymakers were left without a place to stay on the island during the Chinese New Year holiday period.. Of course, many people assume that there's plenty of available rooms on the island and that reservations weren't necessary.Pangkor Island is located just off the west coast of Perak in Peninsula Malaysia.Pangkor is a 40 minutes ferry ride from Lumut, a coastal town which is about 84 km from Ipoh in the northern part of Peninsula Malaysia.

Things to do

Beaches-Pangkor's two popular beach areas of Pasir Bogak and Teluk Nipah offer sun and sea enthusiasts activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, wind-surfing and fishing. While Pasir Bogak is quite developed, Teluk Nipah still retains its kampung, or village, atmosphere.

Dutch Fort-The Dutch attempted to monopolise the lucrative tin trade but despite the presence of the fort, smuggling of tin continued. Disgruntled local leaders frequently attacked the fort which eventually led the Dutch to abandon the area in 1690. Today, the Museum Department has reconstructed the Fort and it stands in its original foundations.

Getting to Pangkor

By Ferry
The closest mainland settlement is the town of Lumut, an attractive, laid-back place about 7km away. From the Lumut pier, ferries depart regularly to different parts of Pangkor Island. Fares are 10 ringgit per person (to and fro), and 1 ringgit for bicycles. First departure from Lumut is at 07:00, last at 20:30. First departure from Pangkor is at 06:30, last at 20:30. Departures are at 30-45 minutes intervals, depending on the time of day, and the crossing usually takes no more than 45 minutes.
The are two major ferry stops for the residents in Pangkor island, namely the SPK Jetty in Sungai Pinang Kecil and the Pangkor Jetty in Pangkor Town. Tourists should stop by the second pier, Pangkor Jetty as this is the main township in Pangkor Island and have a closer distance towards various beaches on the west cost of the island.

Perhentian

_______________________________________________________________

About Perhentian

Located at the north-eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. About 21 km off shores the remote town of Kuala Besut,Terengganu. There are two lovely unspoiled island lie amidst exquisitely clear waters. Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian) and Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian) comprise the Perhentian Island, aptly named after "henti"(stop) as fishermen from mainland Kelantan and Terengganu have, for centuries, stopped over at the island for a rest or to shelter during a major storm. A rocky virgin jungle provides hour of adventures for trekkers who may chance upon flying fox, long-tailed macaques and monitor lizards, while the underneath marine life shows off a splendid garden of coral.

Perhentian Besar
As most of Perhentian Besar's interior is covered by virgin tropical jungle, hiking and trekking are there possible recreational pursuits. A luxury resort here can be booked for accommodation .At trip to this lush and exotic tropical island is a must for all nature lovers and those who enjoy scuba diving, snorkelling, deep sea fishing, swimming, wind surfing, sailing, boating and canoeing.

Perhentian kecil

Claimed to be one of the best getaway beaches in the world among travellers and tourist. Long beaches (locally known as Pasir Panjang) prides itself with long stretch of sandy beach of fine sand with crystal clear water up to a depth of 20ft. Calm waters make you feel as you are in a very large swimming pool !

Getting to Perhentian

Access to the Perhentian Islands is by ferry from Kuala Besut, which is usually reached from either Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu. See the Kuala Besut article for more information.Ferries have previously run from a jetty at Tok Bali, and for a short while direct from Kota Bharu, but both have now been discontinued. There are no ferries to neighbouring islands, but reasonably priced direct transfers to Redang are possible if a day-trip or dive boat has free seats - enquire with travel and dive shops.
From the main ferry terminal at Kuala Besut there are effectively two options:

Speed boats - usually small fibreglass boats with two or three outboards which take 30-45 minutes, charge RM30 each way, and depart according to demand (4-5 times a day). Some are enclosed, some have a fabric roof, some are completely open. If the sea is choppy expect a bumpy ride and in the case of the latter two types expect to get very wet.

Slow boats - usually wooden fishing boats with some seats on the deck which take 2-3 times as long as the speedboats, leave less frequently (usually in the early morning), and charge RM20 or so each way. A slow boat with "Fast Boat" painted on the front is still a slow boat, so use common sense. In the low season slow boats may be the only option

About Redang

Redand Island boasts two beautiful beaches, the Long Beach or locally known as Pasir Panjang, situated on the east coast and Teluk Dalam Kecil, a sheltered cove tucked away on the northeast of the island.
Redang Island archipelago comprises 9 islands, the Lima Island, Paku Besar Island, Paku Kecil Island, Kerengga Besar Island, Kerengga Kecil Island, Ekor Tebu Island, Ling Island, Pinang Island and Redang Island. This archipelago is abounds with marvelous marine fishes, turtles and coral reefs, ensuring a great snorkelling and scuba-diving experience. Redang Island which is approximately 7km in length 6km in width, is the largest of all other islands in the Marine Park.
Redang Island, situated 45km off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, is the largest of all Terengganu's islands. From the very first glance,Redang island will enchant visitors with its compelling beauty. Its incredibly azure waters fringed by white sand, against the backdrop of verdant jungle-clad hills make picture-postcard views.

Places of Interest

Marine Park-Located on Pinang Island to the south of Redang. A rather misnomer since the whole set of islands in Terengganu is actually a marine park, not just this particular island. Rather, the administrative office of Terengganu Marine Park is located on this small island, hence the name.

Getting to Redang

By Air
Berjaya Air has recently opened an airstrip on Redang (code RDN), located on the north side of the island near the Berjaya Redang Beach Resort. As of July 2005, there is one daily flight each to and from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Tha airport is connected by roads to both of Berjaya's own resorts and to the southern fishing port, however transfers from the airport to anywhere else will require a combined car & ferry ride that must be arranged in advance. Note that the flights utilise the secondary airports of Subang in Kuala Lumpur and Seletar in Singapore instead of KL International and Changi respectively.
A considerably cheaper if somewhat less convenient option is to fly to Kuala Terengganu, a one-hour flight from Kuala Lumpur, and continue from here by boat. There are half a dozen flights daily on MAS and Air Asia.

By Boat
The traditional way to get to Redang is by boat. The main jetty is at Merang, some 30 km north from Kuala Terengganu. From Merang, the trip to Pasir Panjang takes about 40 minutes on comfortable, large speedboats.
In season (March-October), there are also ferries directly from the Shahbandar Jetty in central Kuala Terengganu to the Berjaya Jetty on the west side of the island, with approximately 1 hour 15 minutes journey. These are operated by and intended primarily for guests of the Berjaya resorts, but they'll take non-guests on board if there's space available.
There are no scheduled ferries between Redang and the Perhentian Islands, however day-trip and dive boats are constantly travelling between the two so a relatively economical transfer can usually be arranged if you have the time, inclination, patience and flexibility to ask around and wait for a boat that's departing with seats still available.

Lang Tengah

_______________________________________________________________

About Lang Tengah

Lang Tengah Island is a very small island located between Perhentian Island and Redang Island that can be reached by a 30 minutes boat ride from Merang jetty. The clear emerald waters and the coral reefs around it are popular with scuba divers and snorkellers. The island itself is covered by hilly tropical rainforest with varied flora and fauna.
According to the locals, Lang Tengah takes it name from two sayings. The first one saying that 'Lang' comes from 'Helang' in the Malay language which means an eagle, therefore Lang Tengah means eagles resting on the middle island. The second saying spread among the villagers where once upon a time the island used to be the post road for traders and fisherman from the north to replenish their supplies while taking a rest after a long journey.

Kapas

_______________________________________________________________

About Kapas

Pulau Kapas is a small island, just over 2km long and 1km at its widest point. Since it is so close - only 6km from the mainland, visitors seldom stay overnight. For those who prefer to spend a longer time on the island, there are a variety of accommodations available on the island best suited to most travellers
On the edges of the island, colourful reefs extend out into the deep, blue sea where a host of marine life continues to build and live in these rich , exuberant gardens of the sea. Pulau Kapas began to take shape some 270million years ago when the sea level was way below what it is now. Over a long period of time, sedimentation from the land was washed out into the sea, adding layer upon layer, which then formed a strip of elevated land . Eventually this area formed into an island and seeds and pollens that drifted along with the wind and the sea, settled on the drier grounds, giving life to a complete ecosystem as we see on Pulau Kapas today.

How to get there

Kapas Island is just 10 minutes away by speed boat from Marang jetty, which is 18km south of Kuala Terengganu or about 20 minutes by road.
To get to the islands, you can also board a bus or taxi at Kuala Terengganu for the fishing village of Marang. It costs about RM1.00 by bus and RM10 by non-airconditioned taxi. Air-conditioned taxis charge RM15

Things to do

It is a great place for swimming, snorkelling, diving, wind surfing, kayaking, boating or just pure relaxation. The waters around the island abound with sea-shells, fish and turtles. Snorkelling and underwater diving are popular along stretched of shallow coral reefs of the island's western shore. A World War II shipwreck located 5 nautical miles offshore is the key attraction to divers. During the months of May to August, you can go squid fishing.

Rawa

_______________________________________________________________

About Rawa

Rawa Island located 16km off the coast of Mersing. Stretches of white sugary sand, secluded beaches, clear green water and swaying palm fronds offering cooling shades.
A special place that beckons you to be yourself. As the waves carry away your troubles, the breeze smoothens those perpetual frown lines and the sun just warms up every corner of your heart

Getting To Rawa

The only way to get to Rawa Island is by boat, normally from Mersing. From Mersing, Rawa island is a 30 mins speed boat ride or a 1 hour ferry ride. During the peak season (April-October) there are lot of ferries and speed boats moving between Mersing and Rawa, but during the off season there will be just 1 or 2 rides per day. So better check the ferry time in advance and plan the trip accordingly.

Rawa Safaris Resort

Throughout these years, Rawa Safaris Island Resort has grown into an international class resort in the idyllic private island of Rawa in Johor. I recalled back in 1998 that the resort was fairly basic, but it has since been renovated with additional facilities and lodging options.

Lanting Beach Resort
from RM198(2D1N)
The view at this rocky and hilly resort is breathtaking, almost like a bird's eye view. On your way to the dining and leisure are you have to climb a very steep staircase, so steep that you can touch the stairs while climbing it. When reaching there, you can see a collection of antiques, ie. watches, cameras, gramophone, antique radio set, etc.
