Vitamin Angels

At Vitamin Angels, They believe that everyone has a right to basic nutrition, that vitamin deficiency was diseases are preventable, and that education --- in addition to supplementation --- is the key to long term health.

Vitamin Angels works at the village level to educate families on proper nutrition and to deliver life-giving nutritional supplements. They have five core programs:

1. Operation 20/20

Every year, up to 500,000 children go blind from vitamin A deficiency. Tens of millions more are at risk. Vitamin Angels has a set goal of eliminating childhood blindness by the year 2020. Just two high dose Vitamin A capsules given to a child each year will prevent that child from losing his or her sight forever.

2. Children's Nutrition Program

In developing countries, infants and children are at high risk for malnutrition, which can result in crippling diseases, and, in the worst cases, death. Their Childhood Nutrition program donates nutritional supplements to facilities and health projects providing care to children in more than 35 countries yearly.

3. Maternal Health and Well Being

Over four million newborn babies die each year, and millions more women and babies suffer the debilitating and lifelong consequences of ill health. By delivering prenatal vitamins which contain the vitally important nutrients folic acid and iron to women around the world, their Prenatal Project reduces maternal and child mortality, birth defects and ailments causes by nutritional deficiencies.

4. Disaster Relief

When natural disasters strike, loss of income, limited access to food and lack of dietary variety contribute to widespread micronutrient deficiencies. This causes a dramatic increase in the incidence of deficiency diseases such as anemia, scurvy, beriberi and pellagra. Armed with nutritional supplements, Vitamin Angels enters disaster zones quickly to prevent these diseases before they start.

5. Custom Programs

In addition to the four programs above, Vitamin Angels also develops custom programs for specific areas, such as their Tibetan Children's Project, which has distributed millions of nutritional supplements to children throughout Tibet, and their Honduras Multivitamin Campaign which distributes multiple vitamins and deworming medicine to 55,000 children in rural Honduras.
