Vitamin B-12 - Cyanocobalamin

Vitamin B-12. Vitamin B-12 is also called Cyanocobalamin.

The effects of vitamin B12 are still not entirely understood. Waht we know that vitamin B-12 is important for the proper functioning of the brain, for the entire nervous system and also for the formation of blood.

Vitamin B-12 plays an important part in the metabolism of every cell in our body. It affects especially the synthesis of DNA and in the regulation of this sythesis. It is also known, that it helsp in the sythesis of fatty acids and in the energy production process.

Vitamin B12 - What It Is For

Vitamin B12 can not be produced by humans, plants or animals. The only organisms that produce B-12 vitamins are bacteria. We ingest vitamin B-12 usually attached to proteins. The extraction and absorbtion of vitamin B-12 is very complex and people with problems either in the stomach or the intestin may have problems absorbing vitamin B-12.

Vitamin B-12 is indirectly involved in the production of myelin. Myelin is essential for normal functioning of the nerves, it's encompassing nerve fibers and protects them. This explains why B12 deficiency causes illnesses of the nervous system (neuropathy).

Vitamin B12 also plays a role in the production of some neurotransmitters, of catecholamines and in the brain metabolism. These neurotransmitters are also responsible for maintaining the mood. It's easy to understand that depression is therefore associated with vitamin B12 deficiency.

Vitamin B12 Sources

Bacteria can be good, vitamin B-12 is a perfect example for this. These bacteria produce the much needed vitamin B12 for us. By eating food that contains these bacteria, we receive our dose of vitamin B12:

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in all foods that harbor B12 bacteria including different meat, especially liver and shellfish, and all milk products.

Eggs are often included in the list of good vitamin B12 sources, but this is wrong. Eggs also contain a factor that blocks the absorption of vitamin B12.

All fortified breakfast cereals are a particularly valuable source of vitamin B12 for vegetarians and vegans, who do not eat enough meats to supply them with a sufficient amount of vitamin B12.
