The Differences In Retinol And Beta Carotene

Retinol, also known as performed vitamin A, can only occur in foods from an animal source like liver and eggs. Vitamin A from retinol is the most easily used form of this important nutrient.

Beta-carotene and other carotenoids provide vitamin A activity and can be found in plant based sources. The carotenoids are found in the pigments of plants and are what give fruits and vegetables the yellow, orange, and red hues. The human body converts many of the carotenoids into an active from of vitamin A and for this reason is often referred to as provitamin A.
