Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that is a powerful antioxidant. It comes in eight different forms with each having its own unique biological activity. The most common form of vitamin E is Alpha tocopherol which has the highest antioxidant activity for humans.
As an antioxidant, vitamin E helps in cellular defense against the damage of free radicals. Free radicals attack our bodies, they contribute to aging, increase the risk of cancer and heart disease.
What does vitamin E do?
Vitamin E is specially designed to intercept free radicals and preventing a chain reaction of lipid destruction. Since cells walls are made from lipids and fats, it is clear to see why adequate amounts of vitamin E are necessary.
Nutritional experts recommend supplementing vitamin E due to how difficult it is do consume adequate amounts of the nutrient through diet alone. The usual recommended dosage for vitamin e is 400-800 I.U. a day. It would take eating five cups of almonds or ten cups of wheat germ a day to equal what you can get in a pill or two a day.
Vitamin E As D versus DL Tocopherol
Natural versus synthetic vitamin E
The synthetic form of vitamin E, dl-alpha-tocopherol is not as biologically active. It has been shown that they synthetic form of vitamin E does not stay in the body as long as the natural form and it is much less effective.
When shopping for a vitamin E, be sure to buy only the natural form, d-alpha -tocopherol.
