What exactly is a VITAMIN?!

Just the basics ma'am. Just the basics.

The Basics

What are the essentials and how essential are they?

Vitamins are compounds needed in small amounts to facilitate necessary metabolic reactions in order for a human to survive.

In strictest terms, this does not include essential minerals, fatty acids, or other beneficial supplements. Though, the semantics have been bent back quite a bit as many natural supplements label themselves as vitamins, or are sold as "vitamins" in drugstores and health shops, even though they do not fit into this category of necessary metabolic reaction.

In actuality there are only 13 essential vitamins the human body needs. A, C, D, E, K, and all the B vitamins. The B vitamins are water soluble, and all the rest are fat soluble, which means they attach to lipids to absorb into your blood stream (that's why your doctor tells you to eat some food before taking your vitamins).

Purchasing vitamins can be quite a fiasco. There are generic brands, there are over-priced elite vitamins. You can buy from GNC, the vitamin shop, or general health, or you can go to an online supplier. In general, a generic multivitamin will contain all the essentials listed above. With the more expensive multivitamins, you are not actually paying for better vitamins, but for additional supplements added to the formula, such as exotic amino acids and pure forms of organic nutrients.

Hope this vitamin information is helpful!

Basic Things to Remember About Vitamins

  1. Technically, there are only 13 vitamins. Everything else is either a mineral, a nutrient, or a supplement.
  2. Your body does not produce vitamins
  3. Your body can generate some vitamins without eating. For instance, your skins creates D with sunlight
  4. With the exception of some animal processed or synthetic vitamins, it is impossible to overdose on the essential vitamins
  5. Colored vegetables are a good source of most of the essentials.

Vitamins Online

Be careful

As we know, the internet is a wide source of information, but not always accurate. There is a flood of websites devoted to selling "wholesale vitamins" at "40% discount!!!" or better. Be wary of these.

Vitamins online are often not from the best sources. Many times they are knock off supplements imported from China (like fake Roulexes). Or, more commonly they are bulk cases bought by wholesalers after the expiration dates have expired. In other words, you are buying old vitamins, not fresh.

When looking for vitamins or ways on how to deal with stress, make sure you buy from the original source, and I would suggest going with American or Japanese companies, as they make the best!

New The Most Important Thing

The measurements or "iu's" of any given essential is the bare minimum necessary so the body doesn't have a deficiency. The actual amount of vitamins the body should be getting is MUCH higher than 100% IU.
