Answers To Common Vivitar Telescope Questions
The follow link points to a common issue with new vivitar telescope users. Here are the basics and link to the forum with the answers:

"I am 10 yrs old. My grandma got me the vivitar telescope as a gift. I can't see anything with it. I am dissappointed because I wanted to use it for my school project. I need my money back!!!"

Answer: "Put the lowest magnification eyepiece in the telescope-- it's the one that has the LARGEST number written on it...click here for rest of the answer to the vivitar 50x 100x refractor telescope issue: vivitar troubleshooting

Question:"Hello, I have a cheap Vivitar telescope. I was wondering if I could increase magnification from 100X to as much as possible by replacing 6mm eyepiece with another one for example 4 or 3 mm. OD of the scope's eyepiece is .965. I know that most eyepieces are 1.25OD. I can buy .965 to 1.25 converter, but I have a hard time finding innexpensive <4mm eyepeace. Could you help me locate such an eyepiece?"

Vivitar 50x 100x Refractor Telescope

For the beginning "astronomer"

The vivitar 50x 100x refractor telescope is an inexpensive telescope for beginning astronomy. Here is a discounted vivitar telescope deal that may just be what you are looking for.

One last comment on this telescope. You must take your time and focus with the lenses of this telescope. It works but you have to start with objects at a distance in the daytime and get a feel for the focus technique using the lense with the smallest magnification. Try to start with easy daytime targets and then move to the more difficult to find night time objects.

Understanding Magnification and Telescopes

The Telescope Nerd gives us some interesting insights into refractor telescopes

Did you know that telescopes that advertise 1000x power are worthless numbers? The Telescope Nerd, further referred to as TTN, says, "Often times you will see telescopes for sale that claim big magnifications such as up to 1000X power or 500X power telescope. And while this isn't a false claim because the telescope in reference will actually go to that magnification it is a worthless number because telescopes have definite limits to their magnification." Now isn't that interesting to a beginner. So bigger isn't better?

Shouldn't you be able to magnify about by thousands of times? Well TTN says that is not so important. "The magnification isn't really as important as people think. The big thing about the telescope is the light gathering power of it."

I think the Vivitar 50x/100x Refractor Telescope is just awesome! 20 years in the US Navy and using some great optics while I was in , but this inexpensive, dare I say cheap, is perfect for beginning star gazing and birdwatching. Even in the city on a clar night I can see definate craters on the moons surface and I can see satelites that are in orbit. Tracking aircraft isn't easy and adjustments are very critical if you are looking skyward and trying ot focus in on a satelite. The moon is perfect for viewing on a clear night or very early morning. Although the scope can see birds and animals a long ways off it is once again difficult to focus in till you get the hang of it. I now live in an apartment complex and I can read license plates on cars hundreds of yards off. My only wish would be a way to connect my camera to the telescope to shoot photos of the moon and even birds, owls, snakes, even aircraft now that I'm getting better at focusing quicker.
