VME Chassis Styles
The VME chassis has had only one major change to its standards, which was an addition of two extra rows on the connector. Even the old style DIN 41 612. pins can plug into the new style, as the 3 pin rows in the middle of the connector are accessible on the new VME-64X style connector.
This is really advantageous for the military as they love keeping old systems they have had for a long time in tact for training, operating and maintenance purposes.

Why a VME Chassis ?
There is a big list of third party vendors where you can purchase circuit boards that easily can be placed in a VME chassis.
The processor chip (CPU) on a VME chassis is not built into the motherboard. This makes it easy to replace the CPU with one with the newest technology, the only downside being that new software must be written to accommodate the new processor chip.
The longevity , third party support and capabilities of a VME chassis makes it an ideal choice for a chassis.
