What is vocal training software you ask? Basically this is a way that you can learn to train your voice using practice and tutorials on your home computer. This can increase your range, give better clarity, improve volume and many other things you need to know to be a great singer!

However some people do not believe that learning to sing using a program on your computer is the right way to do things. Advocates would disagree with this but the view that one on one tutoring or group lessons will yield greater results is still strong

So what actually does work? Is there a big difference between live tutoring and using a software program? What are the pros and cons of vocal training software?

Vocal Training Software - The Good & the Bad

The Good Points of Vocal Training Software
  • Learn in your own time - One problem most of us have is a lack of time to put to commitments such as singing lessons. Life gets in the way and we may miss a session or two and then it feels like such a burden. With voice coaching software you can learn when you want, late at night, early in the morning, whenever! This gives you a lot of flexibility
  • Lower Cost - While there are some horrendously expensive software packages around you can get excellent and affordable ones that you can download from the net for under $100 dollars. Compare this to singing lessons which can cost from $20 to $50 an hour or more and a few sessions will cost you more for less information.
  • Reusability - Once a singing lesson is over you are left with the information and the memory and maybe some notes you scrawled or maybe a book as well. A good voice training system can be used over and over again with it's information, animations, pictures, recording software and other bits and pieces all available for you to use and review over and again.
  • Privacy - As much as we all want to become stars either professionally or just at the karaoke bare even it can be nerve racking to sing in front of other people even a single instructor. Using software coaching you can practice in privacy without embarrassment until you feel confident enough to take things further.


The Bad Points of Vocal Training Software
  • Less feedback - Obviously a real tutor can provide yourself with real time feedback and advice as you do things wrong or right. You can get a good idea using playback from the software it does not match a real instructor.
  • Less Expertise - Some instructors are very good and can give you tips that you cannot learn from anyone else. However a lot of this is higher level stuff than the basics.


So what is the verdict?

As you can see there are a number of advantages to using an at home vocal training software kit but there are something that you cannot replace digitally too. Overall though if time and cost is an issue you may want to check out some software for voice coaching and if you are a beginner you can also gain a lot from this approach and then may graduate to a singing tutor later when you can use their advice to better effect.
