The Professional Voice Actor

What to look for when hiring voice talent for your business...

Don't take for granted the unique talent required to be a professional voice actor. Many businesses waste money, and even lose business trying to 'pinch pennies' on their advertisement dollars by attempting the performance themselves. And production companies still make their money, with whomever is doing the actual presentation, so they'll tell you it's great! What do they care - they're getting paid!

The professional voice actor, however, must be a master of the spoken word. They must be trained in enunciation, which most of us are not, and in proper intonation in order to portray the text as viable, credible and believable. The voice actor must also be skilled in the arts of acting, drama, theatre and performing arts. All of these are the essence of the voice acting, but with particular emphasis on the timing and interpretation of speech alone.

There are no other visual cues with which to work, so auditory education and sales are very exact and precise, enhanced by the individual actor's particular skills. And, in order to be cost-effective, he or she must also be able to produce high-quality results within very few takes and very little studio time. So, in essence, although you may be tempted to think you'll save money with a less professional individual, you could actually be spending more in studio time and recording costs. Make sure to get a quote before any money is exchanged.

Voice Talent is Everywhere!

The sounds of voice talent is everywhere. In fact, your daily life is probably brimming with it, and chances are, you don't even realize it. At least you didn't before you started considering one of them. If you are wondering why you never thought about them before, it's because you typically aren't supposed to. One of the best things about being a voice actor is the ability to grab someone's attention while simultaneously redirecting their attention from yourself to the product being marketed. That might sound a bit odd when you begin to really ponder it, doesn't it? If you try to do that yourself, you're going to end up drawing everyone's attention to you and away from your product, which ain't very good. That's the biggest reason you need to hire a professional voice artist to do the job for you.

Consider the large number of places that voiceovers end up, and that is after crossing off jingles and T.V.. But you can use voice over artists to introduce your event or your commercial website. Hey, you can even use a voice-actor to announce your personal website if you really want it out there badly enough. Many people those kinds of projects for themselves. Perhaps it's because they do not think of them as important enough to hire an actor. In that case, why are they doing it at all? If it's worth your effort, it's is worth doing right.

For example, if you want to produce an audio book, why would you even think about voicing it yourself - unless, of course, you've got a professional-grade talent. And most people simply don't. Then you have corporate and educational videos, that can be very useful and can be extremely - if done professionally. If you have good material, and the listeners enjoy hearing the actor, then you have a message that can bring you a measure of success. But if people can't stand hearing the voice for one reason or another, then your message is in trouble.

"I talk to people with this voice all the time!" you may say. True, but people will tolerate a lot more face-to-face than they will forgive you for on a recording. And are there people paying to actually to listen to you talk at this point? Probably not. If they are, then don't bother reading any further. This article isn't for you.

You could be under the impression that hiring an amateur or doing it yourself will save you money. Starting out, yes, but if this is a for-profit venture, it will actually cost you more money in the long run. Looking cheesy can cost you the respect of the people you are attempting to impress. Customers are more apt to spend their money with businesses who give the appearance that they know what they're doing. If they hear you bumbling around in a recording, as so many wannabes do, then they are going to rethink ever doing business with you.
