Voice over Internet or VOIP The technology at help to reduce phone bills

A new frontier

Voice over internet simply out is that rather the voice travelling over the lines that are specially used for the phone the voice travels in packets over the internet protocol system.
You will wonder how it works and how it has low costs. Yes these tow things are actually true that the voice over the internet is actually low cost and we need an internet connection to make sure that we can receive the calls.

The technology and how it works

Voip technology

The regular voice is converted into smaller data packets suing the data compression and voice compression technology which enables the voice from a normal analog to be delivered to the recipient also suing the analog phone. The only thing that will be needed on both the sides will be the special adapter to convert the digital voice into a normal voice.

The equipment that is needed

VoIP equipment

Well the main equipment that is needed is a VoIP enabled phone, cable modem as well a phone adapter. A computer may or may not be needed. In some cases where you are using the analog phone the you will need to have a special phone adapter so that you can actually make sue of the VoIP network.

Advantages of VOIP

Advanatge over Ordinary Phones

The main advantage of voice over the internet protocol is that it ahs lower costs and increased functionality in terms features offered. These lower costs are because of the reason that since voice is converted into data packets it uses the same lines which are used for accessing the internet and that helps slashing the costs. In a normal case you will need to have the telephone companies lay wire underground and the reach you at your home whereas in this case you just need the cable modem which will in turn be your gateway to the traffic.

The costs can be substantially especially if you are running a home based small business answering services or are running a call center where the volume of calls can be high.

The biggest advantage in terms of business is that you can choose an area code that you want irrespective of where you live. That way people can think you are a local business giving you more credibility.

The there is the facility of setting up 1-800 numbers which actually tells your customers that you may be a large company whereas you may have employed some answering service specialists.

The next biggest thing is that you can actually get your messages on the computer or the PDA or the laptop and that means that you can actually be in touch with the business every hour of the day .
In the case of a big customer who has offices all over the world by purchasing single dedicated leased lines you can actually control the costs whereas you have actually given more facilities for the employees that they can actually enjoy phone on each desk without you incurring any additional costs.

How to choose one

Select the best Service provider

Select the provider which offers maximum benefits as opposed to the one which offers les cost. The difference is less than ten dollars because most charge between 8 - 25 dollars as monthly fee.

Check the features that are offered like Caller ID or the toll free number.
The emergency 911 number is important but the E911 standard is not offered by all companies so make sure that provider offers that. Of course since you are using vendor then make sure that these companies do not charge for technical support as is the cases with other regular phone companies.

The telephone industry has gone a change since the time the first telephone was launched and all that has only helped the consumers. A lot of companies have undergoing changes like the AT&T of the world. Each passing day you will see new technology like the 3G services of cell phones to the iPhone and what that means is that each company who provides services as well as consumers should be ready and flexible to use the new products and services.

VoIP definition

learn more about VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP, Voice over IP) is a general term for a family of methodologies, communication protocols, and transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Internet telephony refers to communications servicesĀ — voice, facsimile, and/or voice-messaging applicationsĀ — that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating an Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end.

VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. Codec use is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.
