Why I Love Voip Phone Service
Ranked #16,745 in Computers & Electronics, #338,310 overall
Voip is Cheaper than Traditional Phone Services
What is Voice Over IP/VOIP? Voip is Voice Over Internet Protocol which basically means cable internet phone service or broadband phone service. The telecommunications industry is ever changing. Once, the telephone was only available in select locations and hardly anybody had their own personal line. Then the phone became more and more popular and soon it was in nearly every American home.
Traditional phone networks use circuits which are basically inefficient and as more and more people make more and more calls, prone to log jams and tie ups. To handle the volume, the phone company has had to install more lines and service more circuits which add to the expense of the service. Customers looking for a cheaper way of making calls turned to cellular phone service and abandoned their landlines in those areas where that was an option. But, the cell phones that had made the phone company a dinosaur are now lumbering into the price stratosphere themselves, sending countless customers looking for a cheaper, yet reliable alternative such as VoiP. Once the Internet became something you could count on, it was only a matter of time before it became part of the telecommunications powerhouse. We use our computers not only for email and surfing the web, but now we can use them for making our local and long distance phone calls as well. Voice over IP or VOIP is a system that allows us to make phone calls over the Internet's cable or broadband connection. Using any phone, and now including the new video phones, we can connect to the system and the call is routed via the IP address and connected. Long distance phone calls made over VOIP are usually free for residential or very low cost for the small business, making it a huge competitor for the ever-becoming outdated and very expensive phone company.
VOIP has many advantages including: more efficient capabilities for handling phone traffic. This efficiency allows the companies to keep their prices low, which is a distinct benefit for us. Some people think if the electricity goes out or their cable is temporarily down, they won't have phone service. This is not true in most cases. The VoiP Company that I use allows your calls to be forwarded to any phone number you choose, such as your cell phone, whenever your electric is out or your cable is out. Of course, this is a new technology and as more and more people start using it, the service will only get better and better. Voice over IP systems are not only inexpensive, they are easy to install and straightforward to use. Another perk for using voip phone service is that we get to use the futuristic video phones if we choose! Wow. Just 10 years ago I would have never imagined we would have video phones. They are very cool. And of course whomever you're talking to would need one also...all the more reason for everyone to get voip service! Spread the word folks. You're not only going to save a lot of money on your phone bill with no telephone company required, we can talk and see each other at the same time. Just think if you have a relative or close friend across country, or overseas that you don't get to see often. Well now you can simply call them and see them too like a visit in your own home. How wonderful is that? Do you talk to your mother often? Even if she's across town you can call her, and see her too if you choose. I love this service. You can have your video phone, and your traditional phone. No need to be tied to the video phone if you don't want to use it. As far as I'm concerned voip phone service is the best thing since chocolate!
If you're skeptical. Try it out. If you don't like it, you can always go back to your 'traditional' phone service and pay your astronomical phone bills. It's your choice. But I think once you try it, you'll never turn back to the traditional way of talking on the phone. I Love My VoiP!
Did You Know VoIP is what makes Online Gaming Possible?
You May Already Be Using VoIP without even knowing it!

Online and network gaming is one of the fastest growing trends, especially for teenagers, in the computer and technology markets. With a fan base that is made up of more mainstream folks than ever before, online gaming requires new technologies that make the "community gaming" experience more simple and convenient. This is where VoIP comes in. VoIP technologies are sometimes integrated directly into the games. Gamers from around the world playing the same game can communicate with each other through nothing more than a headset with a microphone. How cool is that?
With the latest popular craze involving the Wii gaming system, more people than ever before are gaming on networked gaming stations. This very large (and growing) user base of gamers is creating a tremendous demand for creative and efficient methods of communication during gaming sessions that won't tie up their home phone lines.
Not only is VoIP introducing a solution to this market, but also the VoIP industry is indirectly introducing new customers to the quality and value of the VoIP technology. By providing voice communication for gamers over a broadband IP network, VoIP companies are convincing people that the stereotype of poor-quality voice calls over IP is no longer accurate when it comes to VoIP home phone service.
Once you realize the clarity and quality of your gaming communication, you will be more likely to choose VoIP as your overall home telecommunications solution as well. The VoIP telecom industry is poised to provide a home VoIP solution that provides the ability to communicate within the gaming session without removing the ability for other members of the household to make a phone call. VoIP companies can provide both solutions with one product, you have a tremendous advantage over traditional phone companies within the telecom industry.
There are a number of websites related to the VoIP industry that already exist, which target the online gaming market. These include communication products that serve gamers, or VoIP embedded directly into online gaming websites and purchased gaming software.
Microsoft Xbox - Through the Xbox Live network, Microsoft offers gamers an embedded VoIP functionality where players can talk to each other over the Xbox Live IP network during game play. According to a ZDNet News article, Microsoft serves over 750,000 subscription customers who log over 500,000 hours of game play every day [28]. All XBox live games include VoIP functionality.
Sony Playstation - Sony was the original VoIP gamer with the PS2 game station. The PS2 system enabled players to voice chat over the IP network, with popular VoIP enabled games such as "SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals" leading the way. This game became one of the first VoIP games on the market, and programmers were also the first to develop very successful software codecs that compressed and decompressed voice traffic using a peer-to-peer approach. Once the game was released, the VoIP industry took notice and used much of the technology in later advancements.
Now that you know all this, get your game on! And choose VoIP home phone service over your traditional phone company. You'll save a bundle of money
and you'll never have to pay long distance fees again with the right company.
Have You Fainted Yet?!
Voice Over IP Telephone Solutions
Voice over IP telephone solutions provide lower costs, high quality phone services, no matter who you are calling. Do not get caught up in the techno-myths about VoIP, you can make calls to traditional lines, on a regular phone to regular phone lines so you do not have to sit around and wait for the rest of the family to catch up to your upgrades.

Your call goes out over the broadband connection and then is converted to a digital signal, of course, if you are calling an old-fashioned phone, the signal is reconverted to regular. Voice over IP telephone solutions can reduce costs by eliminating a long distance phone bill, and in some cases the calls are free (after an initial outlay for equipment.)
The choices for voice over IP telephone solutions are ATA: which is an analog telephone adapter and is one of the most common devices for using VoIP. The ATA connects the phone that you already have to your computer or Internet connection and then translates analog to digital. Some VoIP phone providers are throwing ATA service in free as part of a bundled service. There is no lengthy or complicated installation needed and the ATA usually has software that is straightforward and very easy to understand. Mine? I simply plugged it into the router connected to my computer and plugged in the phone line! Easy as 123.

IP phones: these resemble normal phones with the only difference being in the type of connection that they have. IP phones connect to your router and are fairly self contained- the hard and software is right there in the phone in most cases....this is if you choose not to use your regular phone. Essentially it's a phone with the ATA build into the base.
Still not convinced? I promise if you have to make long distance calls, you'll save oodles of money. I've said it once and I'll say it again....I am literally saving $90/mo on long distance calls. That is in addition to local calling. My entire phone bill with local and long distance, all the perks included and all over the country calling is $24.99 + taxes and fees....once all those fees are added to my phone bill it totals around $28.01/mo. How great is that! I think sooner than later *traditional* phone lines will be a thing of the past.
Gateway Voice Over IP
FOR YOUR BUSINESS...

Making phone calls over the Internet is no longer a sci-fi dream-it is a reality. With the cost of public telephone services climbing out of the reach of most businesses, especially small business, solutions are being sought by even the most technologically backward for their long distance phone calls. The VoIP gateway allows this fabulous service to be even better by allowing perks and benefits to regular voice over IP phone service.
A gateway allows for a caller to make up to four calls at the same time and allows for better, more secure control over your phone calls. Improvements are being made all the time, and the newest versions of the gateway allow a call to be automatically rerouted if there should be a problem with one system. We all know that phone service reliability is iffy, at best, and that in most cases than not, the call is automatically dropped.

The new gateways providing Voice Over IP also have easier installation, as they are more streamlined, with less elements to break or malfunction. Remember, no matter what the item, from home electronics to your child's toy, the more pieces, the more problems. Most of the gateways available now are one unit that makes installation or troubleshooting far simpler for even the most technologically backwards person. The gateway also eliminates the complicated port configuration involved in the older PBX connections, or analog ports.
But, who exactly is using these gateway voice over IP systems; who is the targeted consumer? More and more companies of all sizes are switching over to the voice over IP systems rather than the more traditional, expensive long distance companies. The more calls that a company makes to overseas affiliates, the more likely they are to look at this as a cost cutting measure. To stay competitive, even the largest companies have to save money wherever possible, without allowing quality of either product or service to become affected at all. A good voice over IP system allows for calls of the same high quality as a traditional phone service with the same service availability of a broad based cellular/wireless service...no phone company required.
The business manager must look at the upcoming years financial forecasts and judge whether the savings the IP phone service can bring is worth the initial outlay for equipment, training and set up. A savings of only ten or fifteen percent over what is already in place and being used may not be worth the time, cost or effort, but once the savings move in higher percentages it becomes more viable.
The Voice over IP Switch
Easier than you think!
Switching from a public switched POTS (plain old telephone service) to a voice over IP network does not take long, and can be very beneficial. Those old fashioned POTS calls are made with circuit switching, a system that is well over one hundred years old. While there have been great strides in this technology, there was still a lot to be desired as far as phone customers were concerned. Circuit switching is much faster now, but still not as fast as it can be, and that left room for the concept of packet switching to enter the realm.

Packet switching is a more efficient than circuit switching basically because the connections that are made between the two parties are not in use at all times. There are lulls in conversations; there is listening on one end and talking on the other, these things are not taken into account with the circuit switching network. Just like the internet connection, packet switching bundles the given information and sends it along a route that can travel through any number of paths rather than in one single, dedicated pathways.
Your computer, or your voice over IP system takes information, and then sends it as a small packet to the address it is given at the start of the call or session. The address is the phone number, the email address or the website that we are sending this information to. This packet is then sent through the pathways, delivered to the right person and reassembled in a readable way. The advantage of packet switching over circuit switching is the efficiency with which the information is set along the many pathways. The router will choose the least used pathway, allowing for more options and faster transmission time. Because VOIP uses this technology, it can make your phone calls in a much more efficient and therefore cheaper way, allowing for a huge reduction in the costs of communication.

Remember, there's no need to get a new phone number, yours can be transferred to your new VoIP Service, and you can use your tradition telephone.
Simplified Questions and Answers about VoIP
Do You Have Questions? I Have the Answer.
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol and it allows you to place telephone calls over a data network like the Internet. When you use a phone with an adapter of a provided phone modem the calls are placed just like a regular telephone. You first hear a dial tone then the call is made. You are also able to place a call directly from your computer using a conventional telephone or microphone. Very cool!
2. How do I make a VoIP phone call?
Making a VoIP phone call is no different from using a regular land line telephone. You pickup the receiver and listen for the dial tone. You can then dial your number as you always have in the past or with your POTS (plain old telephone service).
3. Are there any differences between making a local call or a long distance call?
The calling rates and fixed plans will vary from one vendor to another depending on the service you select. Please make sure to read all of the fine print associated with any plan that you choose. I like the VoIP companies who offer a flat monthly fee for combined services. When you are assigned a local phone number you to make LOCAL calls to your home area code from any phone, regardless of where you are geographically. All you need is an Internet connection to plug in your phone, it doesn't matter what Internet provider you use, and you can call your local area code from anywhere in the world without paying long distance rates.
4. Who can I call if I am using a VoIP service?
Anybody with a phone! Calls can be made to any local telephone number, mobile phone, long distance number, or any international number. You may use the service to speak with more than one person at a time. More importantly, the person you are calling does not need any special equipment; just a telephone.
5. Does my computer need to be running in order to use VoIP service? But your high-speed internet connection must be active in order for VoIP to function properly.
6. How will I know when I receive a phone call over my VoIP service?
Your VoIP phone will ring like any other telephone.
7. Who regulates VoIP services?
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) promotes an environment for competition and innovation to benefit consumers. Historically, the FCC has not regulated the Internet or the services provided over it. On February 12, 2004, the FCC found that an entirely Internet-based VoIP service was an unregulated information service. The FCC began a broader proceeding to see what its role should be in this new environment of increased consumer choice and what it can best do to meet its role of safeguarding the public interest. In November 2004 they ruled that States do not have the jurisdiction to impose taxes on VoIP services, another victory for the consumer. Sweet!
All this just to say that in my opinion, VoIP is a better and cheaper way to have a home phone!
