What do successful volleyball teams have?
How can this "will" be developed?

Serving tips and drills
- Try to give yourself enough room behind the service line so you do not step on it as you serve. This is one of the most horrible ways to give away a point.
- Use an open palm, NO FIST, and try to get more of the heel of your hand on the ball when you serve.
- If you are hitting too far beyond the court step further back form the line or ease up on your swing.
- Try not to follow through too much unless you are jump serving.
- Practice serving to specific areas of the court by putting markers on the court and serving to hit them.
- Serving to specific areas of the court will ensure that you are able to consistently serve to the weakest players on the opposition's court.
- Until you develop full control try to face where you want to serve and follow through with a smooth overhead motion of the arm.
- If you can already do this then you can go ahead to practice facing one direction and serving to another. That is a cool trick I use all the time.
- You do not always have to serve hard to be effective. Hitting the right spot on your opponents court is just as effective.
- I do not do much jump serving as yet but I am working on it. The key is to get a good toss up and keep your eye on the ball.
- To start out just practice tossing the ball and running to hit it, but do not just hit it, catch it because you are only working on the toss up. Every successful serve
whether jump or flat begins with a good toss up.

Passing tips and drills
- Every successful defense to attack transition begins with a good pass. Or a dig if the ball missed the block.
- Initially face the direction the ball is coming from not where you want it to go.
- Getting the ball where you want it to go is a matter of timing and controlled movements.
- Wait on the ball do not rush into playing it. Let it come to you.
- Do not swing your arms at the ball, use your legs to ease into the pass.
- I am going to call the the surface of your hands that you use to hit the ball while passing the hitting shelf.
- Gently angle the hitting shelf of your hand and turn your body on the ball as it makes contact with your hand while rising with your legs.
- It might sound complex but it is really quite simple.
- It is good to practice this with out a ball something you can do at home. In fact practice all your motions whenever you can. The more you do them the better you get.
- You can also practice practice improving your control
by just passing the ball up in the air to your self. You master the drill when you are able to play the ball up where ever you want instead of having to chase it all over each time you hit it. Put it another way you master the drill if you can stand on one spot and play the ball at least 30 times without moving more than a step.
- Or you could practice digging it off a wall continuously. Doing this 500 times straight each day will help you develop fitness control and the relevant muscles.
- Setters love good passes and so too do attackers so master the art of passing for their sake and remember if a team cannot pass they cannot successfully defend their court.

Setting tips and drills
- Before I say further. A setter is the heart of a team. Being a setter is one of the most honourable positions on the court. If a setter masters his/her craft they can make a team win
any match.
- Practice holding your hand above your head and waiting for the ball instead of rushing to meet it in a hurried motion.
- Improve control by volleying a ball up to 500 times each day on a wall or just straight up in the air. That helps to strengthen your fingers and as I said improve your control.
- The art of volleying is not only for setters so its good if the whole team can do it well.
- The first key to good setting is to know your players or attackers.
- Know where your players are.
- Know where your opponent blockers are.
- Improve your control so you can get the ball where it best suits your attackers.
- Do not ever try to look pretty in how you move your hand. Or let me say that another way, a set/setter looks best when the ball deceives the opponent blockers and your attacker kills BIG time, Not how beautifully you move your hands.
- Jump setting is another great skill that every setter should posses. The key to a great jump set is that you have to be balanced and comfortable in the air. This will allow you the greatest control to execute the set.
- As you would have realized the wall is my best friend. So go to the wall and practice jump setting while facing the wall than try to get it done side on. If you have a partner for the drill you are even better off because you can have them play the ball to you so you practice running forward, backwards and sideways on the set.
Powerballs
A Powerball Gyroscopeis a great device that can be used to improve the strength of your wrist for volleyball. It is very addictive. Once you start spinning it you can't stop. See how fast you could spin one.
You can buy it here.
Spiking tips and drills
- Practice rolling the ball out of your hand when you hit instead of giving it a good old slap. Meaning the ball should be spinning forward off your hand instead of floating off.
- Improve your ability to control
the ball and hit it properly by hitting it on a wall repeatedly. I would also suggest when starting out that you catch the ball and start over each time.
- After doing that practice hitting the ball down from different places above your head i.e. from behind your head, in front where it is supposed to be also from very high above your head.
- Do all this by standing up first about half a court away from the wall and ensure the ball always hit the ground before it reaches the wall. After this you can practice doing it while you jump.
- This is what I did in order to stop hitting the ball far beyond the base line. It also helps you improve timing.
- If you are always hitting the ball into the net try to jump higher or hit the ball higher above your head.
- Jump off two legs unless you are doing a pivot before you hit to beat the block.
- Hit the ball from where your reach is greatest at all times.
- Try to jump from at least 1 1/4 arms length from the net to avoid hitting it. Try to work out with the setter where you prefer it.
- Getting blocked is just a part of the game if it happens to you forget it and move on.
- Always keep your eyes on the ball.
- While keeping your eye on the ball practice widening your vision to see the opponents court so you know where the blockers and other defenders are.
- If you master this you realize that you can dink/tip the ball softly in a open space instead of banging it all the time which gives the same result but uses less energy.
- Remember to cushion your landing by landing on your toes with your knees bent to prevent injuries to your spine and knees.
- While keeping the crowd entertained never forget your team. You have to win the game
.
- Squats are a great way to strengthen legs and improve jumping. Repeat for at least three sets of fifty each day.
- Standing on your toes and tipping up repeatedly for three sets of sixty will greatly improve your jump. I think the drill is called calf raisers.

Blocking tips
- A block is the first line of defense for a spike. If done properly you can keep the ball out your court and out of your teammates faces.
- Study your hitters so you know there favourite direction to hit, and where they are not comfortable hitting.
- Position your block where the ball is and not where the hitters body is.
- Jump just after the attacker especially if they jump higher than you and are able to hang.
- Observe and note the selling points of the hitter. That is the things that tell where they are going to hit. This includes eyes, where the body faces and the direction of their run up.
- Not many hitters can change the direction in which they hit.
- If your attacker loves hitting across the court leave the line empty. It could be because of an inability to hit down the line.
- A successful block
slows down an attack for the defenders or completely shuts out the attack.
- Do not swing your hands up when you jump to block you do that when you are spiking.
- Keep your hands above your head the whole time and just jump with your legs.
- Remember to cushion your landing by landing on your toes with your knees bent to prevent injuries to your spine and knees.

Keep improving your game
Do not only watch the pros watch high school and college videos you will be surprised at how much you can learn.
Also be critical of what the other players are doing in the videos. Especially when they make mistakes try to put yourself in the situation and think how differently you would have done things.
